April 2017 Fun Cab Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve). Theme chosen by prior month winner Glenn: 3d or 2d egg shapes.Rules: All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos and 1 of the 3 photos will be used for voting to see what cab folks like the most (please note the photo you want used). You can change your photos or improve your cab and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline. Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome. Prize : winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting, no physical prize yet. Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/77476/february-2017-fcc#ixzz4d2LIBz2g

I personally haven't tried one. Just started working 5 days / week again so i'll see if i can find something to do a 3d one also, but if not i have a cab thats in easter colors as well and looks like dyed eggs as its kinda pastel colored.

I had an egg all ready to cut, but then I decided I hated it. Now I have to go back to the drawing board.

LOL I hated mine ... and proceeded with it ... and still hate it Seriously ugly cabochon - I doubt I'll try to sell it - probably throw it in the free gifts bin. I bought a small boulder of that Kona Dolomite out of sheer curiosity and now wishing I hadn't. I like with working with the strawberry onyx we collected better - and it's more attractive than this rock I bought.

When I think of Easter eggs Russia and Ukraine come to mind: Russia for the wonderful Faberge eggs and Ukraine for its creative and imaginative egg decorations. I also think of malachite which was a favorite gem material of the Czars and their lapidary artists. So I checked my malachite stash and found a slab that was basically preformed for an egg shape. Here's the progression from slab to cab. The finished stone weighs 93.4 ct., measures 47 x 37 x 5 mm. and has a mirror polish front and back. It has a uniform girdle and a gently sloping low dome. Pink Opal I'm really pleased with the way this one has worked out. Made entirely on Easter Sunday 16/04/17 or 04/16/17 I believe some would have it. I spotted a piece of rough, a little intriguing with some dendrites and a blush of pink. Would I be able to preserve the mound of pink opal? I'd like to bring some dendrites through. I would like those on the right (point up) to be background. The blatent one near the edge will be ground away or nearly - enough to conceal under a bezel. Rarely for me, I polish both sides: top to #30,000, underside to #10,000. This helps with the light transmission which is important to see the features highlighted in the translucent pale opal. Even more rarely, this cab was completed alongside the making and decorating of an Easter cake! Rough Preform with a hint of dendrites Pink Opal cabochon - cut / ground to #1200 - prepolish Diamond polished Pink Opal cabochon #30,000 Pink Opal cabochon Pink Opal cabochon Pink Opal cabochon Pink Opal cabochon - final ETA Pink Opal cabochon - reverse ETA drocknut - the material (above) you sent - thank you! A chocolate theme - Happy Easter Vanilla sponge marbled with Chocolate sponge; home-made dark-chocolate & double-cream ganache; a nest made from 'flake' chocolate filled with chocolate eggs; three hollow-milk-chocolate rabbits and fluffy bits stuck down with ganache... obviously my inner girl again

Yep, delicious! Love ganache. Never heard of double cream ganache. I don't know if it may be called Heavy Cream in the US. I guess it might be possible to make with single cream. It's just how I learned to do it and forgot all the detail so now I just 'knock it up'. I'm pleased to be reminded that is should be roughly equal quantities of chocolate and (double / heavy) cream. I just kept going until the consistency was right, which is a bit tricky to judge since it is temperature dependent... Putting rum in though~! Now there's an idea. Maybe skip the cake and just make rum truffles! ganache recipe linkETA - sorry, starting to drift off topic... back to the egg-shaped-cabochons!
