I'm pretty new to slabbing. I'm curious how thick you cut your slabs? I'm guessing different thicknesses for different purposes. Maybe specimen slabs would be thicker than cab slabs and maybe large cabs will be thicker than small ones.
What thicknesses do you cut?
Thanks Glen

That one gets asked a lot. Try the link below for a bunch of previous threads on the subject> slab thicknessChuck

If I am cutting slabs without knowing what is in the stone then I go for Quarter inch, If after opening the stone It could cut a large cab then a bit thicker for the next one, or if its going to be a small cab because of cracks or just to pick out a pattern a bit thinner.

1/4" is sort of standard unless you have a special purpose for thicker or thinner. Like for a cat's eye cab you want almost a half inch. Or sometimes people cut thicker for unstable material. Or they cut thinner to try to get more slabs out of expensive rock.

I've had a bit of a conversion of late. There was a time when I would not buy less than 1/4, now I don't mind a little thinner. I'm doing lower domes now. I tend to avoid thicker.
Peace, Rich

Yep, I'm with Rich. usually cut about 1/4 inch or a hair thinner but for my own cabs, I prefer shallow domes so cut 3/16" slabs. Less time grinding and doming than with thick slabs and in some cases, ie plume agate, more translucency....Mel

Cabs slabs are 7 turns on the 24" FranTom, 18" HP and the Nelson 12". The 10" is 5 turns. They all work out to 1/4 ish. Knife scales are 5/4 turns for most knives, about 3/16, maybe a little less. Basinite and most quartz caps, guitar picks and Elizabeths earrings are 3 turns for the most part, sometimes thinner, 1/8 or a bit less.

I have some thick slabs. With felt stickum feet on the bottom, they make good coasters.
