Here is a piece of jasper I have. There is approximately 3/8 of an inch of rock needed to be removed to get a flat surface. Not sure what its called, but in saw mill vernacular its called 'opening'. So when I am ready to open this piece, should I open to just face it flat and have a little bit of 3/8 inch tumbler fodder, probably only useful for the smalls needed to grind? Or do I open deeper to get some pieces that may be something when done in the tumble? Or do I send it to you because you are a great person?

Ooooh! I like your last option. 😄
What you do with depends on what you want in the end. Nice piece!

I am, no doubt, the all around best person you will ever meet. Seriously though..... I don't even have a saw, so I should shut up.

Great things come from end pieces. I'd cut it thick enough to have it and the larger piece at the very least. I cut 5 turns on my vice adjustment (probably 3/16")for cabs. Never be afraid of your rock. It's yours and you are trying to save it from obscurity.

Actually I misspoke. I try to slab at1/4"because I like the freedom of a higher dome. Too thin is too thin and harder to finish.

Nice rock i would consider 1/4" so you can do something with it if you want later if not still would make a nicer end piece.and as your last option if you want send me only a small slablet not the whole thing. Thats how nice i am, nice!

That stone should cut some one cab wonders that should be wonderful. I would make the first cut a little thick so it's cabable.
I would be open to buying one of the slabs.
Peace, Rich

It will be awhile before I cut. I am anxious to get at it. Packed for a move, recovering hernia surgery. I may head to the local club to use the saws there. I will let you know.

Outstanding. Did you collect that yourself.

No, I have the "gift of gab". A nice young lady went through the trouble of picking it from a bin for me. I may send her a flower. Its from Madagascar. There are several more, not quite as nice.

It's called a "window". And Nice!! Well done! The window is the first slice. Window because that's when we get the first glimpse of the possibilities, or lack there of?

Slabs from apparently pretty rocks are like potato chips. I almost never can stop at one no matter how the first one looked.
