I'm going to the Brunswick/Casco Bay Maine area in July. Do any of you know about any rock hounding in the area? I may be able to get to a tourmaline area, but I was thinking more about agates and jaspers. I know there is lepidolite somewhere up there, but I'm not too keen on hounding any.
edit- A quick google search brings up lots of sites about mineralogy, but that's not what I am looking for. The only thing I have ever seen up there was lots of granite, but that was before I did lapidary.

Sorry, can't help. Drank a truckload of beer in the Ogunquit to Old Orchard area 40 years ago, but back then I wasn't hunting for rocks.

Thanks anyway, I knew it was a long shot to ask. I'll just poke around where ever I go.

Oxford County is the pegmatite district that has many collecting locations for tourmaline and beryl. If you are into mineral specimens, there are many opportunities to collect for free, or guided pay to collect tours. I have been there twice now and can't get enough. Bethel is ground zero, but personally I prefer Paris. Maine is really well documented and they make it easy for rock hounds to find collecting locations. Check out the site below and go to Chapter 6. The map will highlight collecting locations. Each loaction then has a detailed PDF map and description of what you will find. www.maine.gov/dacf/mgs/explore/minerals/guide/guide.htmOne of Maine's annual rock & gem shows is at Bethel the second weekend of July. I have been there twice. It is small and quaint, but I always manage to buy something to add to my collection. There is a link below. ocmgassoc.blogspot.ca/p/gem-show.htmlMaine is not only about rocks. Don't forget about the lobster. Darryl.
