This has bugged me ever since we moved to Wichita Kansas (near the exact CENTER of the US) in 1953. Why does everyone insist the Midwest is east of the center of the country? That area never has been the Midwest, hasn't even been close to being the Midwest since the Louisiana Purchase in 1803!

Because I live here, and I have lived in the midwest my whole life. (Except for some globetrotting with Uncle Sam) With some investigation I trust you will find the term came from pioneer times. It wasn't the wild wild west, but sure wasn't the east.

If we were doing a "free-association" thing and you said Mid-West to me, I would respond, "Chicago." How this information helps you, I am uncertain.

Between the western side of the Mississippi and the peak of the Rocky Mountains.
Approximately every 15 degrees, about same as time zone changes, the east west designations change.

As a former Commiefornian, I always thought the midwest would be the "midwest" kind east of the Rockies and west of the Mississippi. Then east of there ya got the northest and the southeast and everything on the Gulf cept Florida is the deep south. Never new what to call the Dakotas and Nebraska cept a little slice of cold Hell.

Never new what to call the Dakotas and Nebraska cept a little slice of cold Hell. Ole and Lena farmed in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. One day a government man stopped and talked to Ole. After the gman left Ole came in for a cup of coffee. He told Lena the government said the river used to be west of their place and the government was going to survey the land as such. Their farm was going to be in Minnesota! Lena said "Goot ting Ole, I've had enuff of dem Nort Dakota vinters!"

Living in Minnesota I always thought I was in the North Central US. I cannot understand how the states East of us can be figured as Midwest. These designations must have came about long before all the states were created or shaped as they are today..............................MrP

I always thought it was post Louisiana Purchase terminology where the new territory was West and the existing territory that bordered it was Midwest.

Here is where the Media thinks the Midwest is in relation to the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. I think they are 214 years out of date.

Silly me, this is where I think the Midwest is. But actually, that is the Central US. So what do I know?

A real look at East and West. NOW where do you think the "Mid-West" Is? It looks like Utah to me. The Media isn't doing too bad. That is only an error of about a thousand miles.

Where I am in the southern part of MN I am in both the Midwest and the Wild, Wild West.
We are legendary.
