Any suggestions for rock shops or collecting sites near Bennington VT? Going to be driving through Albany, Troy, Brattleboro, Bennington. One book I looked at said not much in the area..but maybe some blue quartz near Bennington.
Thanks!

Looks like there is cabbing grade blue quartz 6 miles east of Bennington. Wonder if it is like the PA material, or better. Or that rare blue star material.

I live in Albany, and your source is correct. The area is pretty sparse. If you've time to travel a bit further west, I recommend stopping at the Herkimer Diamond mines that are an hour and a bit west of Albany down I-90. It is well worth the trip. Also, an hour north-east of Bennington puts you in the Adirondack state park and near the Ausable River. You can find quartz, labradorite and garnets at multiple spots along the Ausable.

A lot of interesting geology in that area, but not a lot of lapidary materials. I never did the Herkimer diamonds thing, by the time you're that far west you're in trilobite country. There are some fossils in marble near Manchester, and some mineral deposits around Mt. Equinox. Over in the Adirondacks it can be spotty but there are some pegmatites with cool stuff although most are kind of bland.

Thank you both. We did not have time to detour...maybe another time. I would love to attempt Herkimer. Stopped at the roadcuts where the blue quartz is alleged...lots of pegmatite but never spotted the quartz. Maybe another time. ;-)
