Help me re adjust the drive engagement for a Barranca Diamond 24” for a frustrated friend.
Its my friend’s saw and the power feed has stopped working. The central drive rod is turning, but the brass “split nut” device is not engaging properly. We can wiggle the lever and position it so the sled slides freely and in other positions so that it seems to lock, but . . . it does not advance when saw runs and moves with a grinding noise of threads against threads when the sled is forcefully pushed to check for engagement. The BD user manual shows how to adjust that brass split nut, but not adequately. A call to customer service was inadequate beyond the rep trying to read the manual to me. If you have this or a similar BD slab saw model you can probably help me.
They say the lever goes straight up (12:00) to disengage and at 03:00 or 09:00 to engage, but his lever has obviously vibrated loose and the postion of the “cam” that tightens the brass engagement plate has shifted from its original functioning position (both in rotation and in its transverse position). I can’t see the “cam” but it feels like it is flat on one side (that flat probably lets the brass nut fall away from the drive rod i.e. disengage). The cam feels like it is rounded on the sides 90 degrees from the flat so that hump probably pushes the brass against the drive shaft when rotated appropriately. However since his entire engagement lever has loosened, I need to know how to reposition/tighten it. 1. It moves across its rotational axis – which is to say it can be wiggled nearly ½” such that the L handle moves under the edge of the vice and the other end (the cam end) protrudes that much on the other side (this movement certainly affects the transverse position of the cam relative to the brass block). It shouldn’t move laterally – so something must hold it in the proper configuration. 2. The adjustment procedure involves two allen screws and a set screw between them that apparently adjust the angle of the top half of the brass plate. We adjusted them slightly but with little effect. Curiously one of the screws is quite high (toward the blade) and the other is quite low (the one closest to the front of the saw) – and I suspect they are way out of adjustment. I’m trying to avoid taking everything apart, (its all in place at present but apparently not tight enough to function correctly) but unless someone can help me I may be forced to take it apart and inspect/replace the brass plate. Alternative 3 is to contact Barranca again and hope for a customer rep who has “seen” one of their saws beyond the catalogue pages. Hints are welcome. I will discuss in open, thru PMs or by phone with willing advisors. Tom
P.S. BD has a downloadable user manual (40 pages), but it basically tells you how to tinker with a brand new saw, not one with an unintended problem.
