I am going to do a little tumbling when it warms up a little. I am going to order from the rock shed some ao 500 and polish. I also want to maximize my shipping. I am assuming (going to call them) that 5 pounds of each will fit in a med or large flat rate. If there is empty space it would only make sense to get more of one or the other. So when you polish with the jamesp recipe 500 ao then ao polish what is the ratio you would use in a batch. Twice as much 500? More polish?

I use the same amount of 500 as polish Billy in the vibe. 2 tablespoons/14 pounds of rock. In the rotary you can use half as much polish.

In the GY ROC A I use 1 level tbsp. of pre polish or polish in those stages .

Billy, you might consider adding ceramic media to the order to fill the box.
I saw in a recent thread that you added a couple vibes to your shop. Do you have rotary tumblers to do the coarse grinding?

Do you have rotary tumblers to do the coarse grinding? I think I might just cut and pregrind cabs and try and finish them in the vibe. Think I will still need media? How would broken tempered glass work?

How would broken tempered glass work? Cabs are the most important load when it comes to media. I run about 30 percent cabs to 70 percent media on all my cab loads. Flat areas on rocks are the hardest thing to polish. The other huge issue is that without all the media the cabs will all get cemented together. All those flat backs end up stuck to each other. Trust me on this one. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/72521/tumbled-cabs-10-19Chuck

I just got a line on a large lot of 27 micron aluminum oxide(guesstimating about 675-700 grit) would that be a good pre polish? It's aerospace grade, made for media blasting. I might even be able to get enough to sell if people are interested.

jamesp I see different kinds of AO out there when I do a search. Some is brownish pink, white, self explanatory optical grade and everything inbetween. So if you had a 500 grit of any AO will it have the same effect in the tumbler?

Brown white and clear seems to make little difference Billy. Never tried black. Aluminum oxide is cheap, common in the clays you work with.
It does get expensive. If you ordered AO 500 +/- 5% size variation it would cost like 10 times more. It is difficult to screen. I think most tumbling grade is +/- 30 %. Much cheaper. No matter, tumbler breaks it down. I prefer the Rock Shed AO.
