May 2017 Fun Cab Challenge
This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve).Theme chosen by prior month winner metalsmith: It is May already. Best crack on. The colours of May are associated with lush growth, blossom & flowers: green, white, blue, pink, purple, yellow and orange: Rules: All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos and 1 of the 3 photos will be used for voting to see what cab folks like the most (please note the photo you want used). You can change your photos or improve your cab and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline.
Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.)
All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list.
Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material.
Also, don't forget to include the name of the material.
If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first.
If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome.
If you would like feedback (constructive criticism) ask for folks to pm you if they wish to offer tips. If you are new and think your cab isn't too good but its the best you can do post it anyway, getting feedback is how i got to where i am now!
Prize : winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting, no physical prize yet.

Ouch, did not read the required colour-sheme beforehand. Lucky for me, it just about fits in...... Let me start by saying thanks to Bobby1 who sold me this challenging slab eons ago. Due to the alignment of the fibers (original cut) and the thinness of the slab, I never dared to challenge it. Now I have grown a bit, so I finally I dare to get carving. As said, one slab, 3 challenges on 3 different platforms. Namibian Pietersite, "The Slab" Cut-offs and preforms, wet Done. This is the easier of the two cabs, as its small, so realigning the fibers to get all round effect was rather easy. Has full colour-range head on, as well as from most angles. Colour changes with light-source, but overall its quite bright. Maybe a bit more intense to naked eye than in pictures. Here my fav picture thus far Thanks for looking, Kurt

That's cool. The theme is meant to guide, not exclude. Looking forwards to seeing the carving too.

Thank you. Will take my time with the bird. The biggest worry will be wing-tips. Pietersite is rather easy to flake off. And loosing any of the feathers could ruin the whole look. Other than that, it should be quite straight forward.

Other than that, it should be quite straight forward. There is a really thin glue that wood workers use when putting down wood flooring that is like water that will help stabilize it.

Haven't had a lot of time lately, between work, the farm and going into winter, the days are getting shorter. Here a piece of rose quartz I got a little while back. I can't remember where it was from, but Brazil seems to ring a bell. needs more sanding and repolishing, and remember to clean the stones before taking photos. The third photo looks to be a flaw but I run the glass over it and could find only lint.

I see there's a May cab contest. Was there ever a vote for the April contest? I've searched and can't find anything. Just curious.

I'm not getting much cutting done these days. This is about the only thing that has been cut this month except for a couple of 2-3mm diam turquoise discs. I'm just keeping my oar in and anyway I can't find an image of the rough, but what chance for this with the present competition? There's a chance I might get to cut something else today.

I should be able to get in this month, packed up most of my stuff. I'm not sure from that whether to expect an entry. Part says 'yes' part suggests 'no'. Which is it to be???

This is my obligatory entry for May -- competition's very tough this month. This was a little chunk of nice quality Lapis that needed a special cab treatment or I'd lose too much weight. I decided to see what I could do to take advantage of its natural shape. The result will be a pendant stone when I get back to melting metal again. I'm hung up at the moment with trying to get the right equipment to operate with propane/oxygen. Rough Lapis/Preform Lapis Finished
