There's a listing for one of these on Craigslist for $125. Here's the link: Lortone QT-N.R.
Is this the same as a QT-66 only older?

Yes, and that's a pretty good price, I would snatch it while you can.

Is this the same as a QT-66 only older? Check it over good , if it has been sitting awhile or not maintained well it could need parts . Bearings , belt , lid liners . Check for up and down movement on the shafts . The price is about half price of new and if you start replacing parts , there goes the bargain .

Well three hours of lovely DC traffic later, I got it for a hundred bucks. The guy who had it got it from an estate sale of an artist named Janet K. Roberts. She was the wife of Ambassador Owen Roberts, the former U. S. Ambassador to Togo. They lived in Cairo, the Congo and Nigeria as well. Janet was apparently an artists with interests in many media, including watercolors and she apparently bought this unit to explore tumbling and jewelry making.
The unit itself appears not to have been ever used. The inside of both barrels, including lid liners, are pristine. The barrels mod have some reddish staining on the outside, a powder-like-substance that has left finger prints/marks, and rubs off fairly easily. Maybe jewelers rouge? The shaft and bearings seem solid, with little movement; they run smoothly. The power cable is old, very short in length, but the insulation is still good. The plug is an older style, with just a cardboard backing on the prong ends, but that is easily replaced. There appear to be nylon discs that seem intended to keep the barrels from running up against the frame on the same side the shaft bearings are on. One of this is missing, the other is intact, and pop-riveted on; I am sure I'll be able to come up with some means to replace the missing one.
All in all, I think I made out pretty good!

One thing was missing on this unit, the bracket that holds the drum in place. Got that on Tuesday and set it up running with just one drum as an initial test. Seemed to work fine, and has been running continuously since then, put it in the sunroom as I sprained my knee and can't get downstairs. The motor failed sometime in theist hour or so; seized and was smoking, still drawing power. It is outdoors now, cooling down. Fortunately it was discovered quickly by my wife, there is little doubt in my mind it would have caused a fire sooner or later if left as it was.
Not clear why it failed; did not seem like it was binding, or overstressed, and I oiled the bearings before starting it up.
I know replacement motors are available, any recommendations for best place price-wise to obtain one?

You can call Lortone and order parts directly. They are very good to work with. I'm not sue refit hey have the best prices. I'd call there first to see if their current motors fit the older tumbler. Check The Rock Shed for prices too.

Just checked The Rock Shed (in SD) web page and found a replacement motor for the QT66 priced at $58. I have had good dealings with them in the past and their shipments have been prompt.
