My understanding is that no one knows how poppies form (or fill me in if you do). Oolites have a known phenomenon (think gobstopper) - supersaturated solutions, with concentric deposition happening upon a seed grain on a diurnal basis. There's another thread on oolites somewhere: they cover a huge swath of the USA and also (different swath) England. Think how many millions upon millions of tiny little spheres must have been rolling around at one time or another. Totally amazing!
