I've got 2 rotary tumblers (Lortone 3A and Thumler AR2) running in the basement and I can't hear them running without going downstairs. Looking for ideas for a simple audible or visual alarm setup to let me know upstairs when they stop turning for whatever reasons... daily trips downstairs to check up on my 3A that likes to break drive belts is getting old! Thanks.

You can get a cheap camera from Radio Shack, and be able to watch and hear what is going on. I used to keep one in the barn, so I could watch for when the ewes were ready to lamb. It is even in color.

Kind of boring, not much of a plot and you already know the ending . . .

I put mine on a fire safe board or concrete on a concrete floor with a ceiling 15 feet above. I figure they can burn up without the horse barn going up in flames. Seriously, I had a box fan on a horse stall to catch on fire and burnt the motor up. Luckily only the motor caught! You should see my setup for my turkey roaster to cook rocks! All metal and concrete! That thing has a runaway thermastat and it gets HOT!!!

That's actually what I was going to go with as well. If not this, some type of Wi-Fi camera system that would allow the OP to view his tumbling station from a remote location. My neighbor comes over to our house and can view what her kid is doing after she puts him down for a nap. I'd think this would work well for you. It's a video feed, and I believe it's all Wi-fi based. I "think" she views the feed on her phone, but I can't say for sure as I've not paid too much attention to it. That said, what's your concern? If you have a total power outage, you would know based upon what's happened in the rest of your house. Are you expecting your tumbling circuit to have issues? If so, I think the baby monitor/camera could be your solution. It just depends on your budget and what you want to monitor. Good luck. Dave

No big concerns really except for what I already said about belts...I'm a DIY electronics type (old school) and I got lots of parts laying around and thought a simple circuit that would turn on an LED or turn on a buzzer when the barrels quit turning would be fun to build and may be of use to others as well... AND save me trips downstairs cause I'm not getting any younger That being said a baby monitor would do the job for sure but for now it's overkill as I'd rather build something out of stuff I got cause it's fun...

All I can think of is something optical ... like a flat black patch on the silver barrel lid, plus an LED illuminator and a photo sensor. When you stop detecting pulses it turns on a fault light. Some kind of One-shot circuit with a 555 timer chip.

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking...although 555 timers are "new" technology to this old technician who's training stopped at tubes and transistors My general rule of thumb when doing projects is if it needs a circuit board I'm out ! I'm wondering if there's a more mechanical way to do it...maybe a module of some sort with a wheel riding against the tumbler barrel that would automatically flip a switch when it stops turning...there must be something out there that would do that kind of thing?
