Apache tears are small nodules of obsidian. Last one is mariposite from California. The picture after the turquoise (if that's what it is) has a couple slabs of snowflake obsidian on top. Looks like quartz crystals in the second picture.

Thanks! Much appreciated. We'll get them labeled.
The black looking rock at the top with the snowflake obsidian is Teton Jade.

I love how you guys all know these rocks so well; while here I am with my reference book fervently hunting for them to try and (50% of the time fail to) identify. I cannot wait until I have the knowledge so many of you have!!

The vast majority of people here sure aren't and we learn from our really capable and long time members like Sabre, Dave, James, Shotgunner. and many many more smart people. As we learn we pass on the things we learn to other newer or less experienced folks. Just enjoy the friendship and google stuff. Easier than a book..

I have noticed there are many knowledgeable people who like to share their wealth, it is great!! I took a bunch of photos of my rocks pre-tumble and am going to recruit you all to help me identify them. I just need to focus and edit them a little bit first; tad too dark for my liking. Also, I love books because you can mark the pages and refer back to things. It is as if it is more hands on than google, so I feel like I retain the info better, if that makes any sense at all.

Sure does make sense. You might work on the id of most of them your self. Older pictures of material in books might not be as good as some of the rock shops that sell rough rock and tumble on line. Usually good pictures of the material. The place you got your tumble stones would be best. Rock shed, Richardson's Ranch, gemshop in Wi.,Great Rough... Not alibaba stuff, doesn't work on a retail level and can lose your butt.

Wait, where did you find this stuff?! My Mom liked to pick up rocks, and as a result, people would give her rocks from here and there. Some she would find while out hiking, some while looking in old antique shops, some gifted to her. Then when Dad bought the rock saw equipment from my uncle, he gave a few rocks as well. That and Dad has found quite a few rocks through the years also. I have no idea where they all came from, but a lifetime of picking up rocks here and there and people giving them to my parents wound up with a few to play with.

Really nice collection you've got going. Extra special because it comes from your parents. I can only hope my kids appreciate my collection some day!
