I need some specimens of that stuff. I'll probably never collect it, so my desires are just wishful thinking. That's just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Nice solid colours Dave. Isn't the one (second down on the left) The piece held by Dave Penney (is that you?)in previous post? No real skills here, but in love with FA. FA is what brought me to this hobby. This piece actually started it all: Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate Dragon 1 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Not being able to select personally on location makes chasing colours an expensive hobby, but I rather chase overall beauty instead of commercial popular colours. So one has to get inventive to make things more attractive. Mexican Fire Agate Kainzer Kurt (2) by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Looking forward, to a lot of posts from people hiding their treasures. Please let us see what you got. Its not a race or competition, but I would love to see the whats out there,

Great post and some beautiful fire agates! kk did you do that one with the face? I don't remember seeing it. It's crazy cool! I'm gonna sticky this to give folks a chance to post their own fire agates. I've only ever had a few cabs of it myself. I'd love to see what people share. christopherl1234 ?

Beautiful stuff, keep 'em coming. Fire agates and opals are some of those materials that I've not dared to venture into but I love looking at them and the talent of kk and others who carve them is just off the charts.

Great post and some beautiful fire agates! kk did you do that one with the face? I don't remember seeing it. It's crazy cool! Yeah, Christopher, Gemfeller and I do similar things, yet our style is very different. But we are not the only ones in the game. So even if you have only a few Tela; lets see them in the hope that more folks come on out to play. As for the Monk, yes about 4 years ago. The face is made of opal (very simple as only 4.5mm in size)and gave the hooded appearance a surprisingly effective look. Its one of the pieces I send to Tom Shearer for pictures. While he gave me the gorgeous picture of my "first " piece, his picture of the monk did not work out as hoped for. So the pic above is just a simple play with mirror. Will have to re-do it sometime to get a better one. For now, till people chime in, I think I shall post one piece a day to keep the post on the first two pages when people sign on. I really would like members to contribute to see whats out there. On FB there is lots, but rather boring as everyone seems to want to show only currently favored colours. Finished set pieces would be an added plus. On FB, we see a lot of single stones (usually very small ones to favor one colour or other), but hardly any pieces set/utilized in wearable jewellery.

Oh! that is on a mirror so we can see the other side! I thought both images were carved from a single piece. Even more spectacular than I originally thought![/div]

Crackled fire pattern is always a sight to behold. I think that is what the notion of Lava flow/fire is based on. There is quite a few pieces that I really like, but the one I absolutely adore; is your pendant. What a splendid creation. A treasure to behold.

Copied from Deer Creek thread: kk , didn't mean to belabor the obvious but thought perhaps you might be unfamiliar with chalcedony rose occurrences in the U.S. To all: when it comes to Deer Creek fire agate it's impossible for people like me to compete with the quality of Dave Penney's stones -- as the mine owner he literally has the "pick of the litter." At one time I thought of booking a run on his Geminator until I found out how much it costs -- Ooof! I'm not carping about the price but it's far more than I could possibly justify spending. What follows are examples of work I've done with FA from a variety of sources, mainly Deer Creek, Slaughter Mountain and Aguascalientes, Mexico. I've posted some of the jewelry pieces previously. I learned about fire agate from one of the old-time Deer Creek mine owners, Don Van Dusen, who was my mentor and supplier until his death. Due to a move and other events I no longer actively cut the material but I have a love and great respect for this greatly undervalued gem stone. I'll hopefully be able to complete a few more jewelry project in the future. I have hundreds of self-cut cabs and I've selected a few for posting here. True, a lot of pieces are rather dark and dissapoint after seeing the vivid colours in pictures. But, don't have to be. There are extremely bright vivid colours out there that can be seen at any time anywhere, but those are rare and gives the material its value (thats where the comparison with diamonds comes in when relating to how much rarer FA is).

In Quartzite I have looked at hundreds of finished pieces of fire agate. I have never seen a piece like Dons. Diamonds are way more common.

Quality is out there, and it does not always have to be expensive People tend to buy on impulse, no one seems to be able to wait, and that often leads to inflated prices. Lots of opinions on what is attractive and what deserves a higher price, does not make it easier either. But,.... they are out there even though, yes, mine-owners do have first choice and one should know them to get hold of top material. They see serious people and sell accordingly. Be a simple tourist, get tourist quality stuff.
