I'm new to this board, and really new to tumbling rocks. I've got my first batch in the first stage, and it's going very well. Slow, though - my brother-in-law keeps turning the tumbler off at night. I've always loved rocks, and have been known to drag better than 100 pounds home from a day at the beach. My husband and I want to join our local rock club, so we can learn more about rocks, and go on these great field trips we keep hearing about. My sons are all interested, too - the 16 year old loves breaking rock up. The 14 year old is happy to hunt with me, and the 6 year old wants his OWN rocks. Anyway, just thought I'd say hello, and that I'm glad this board is here. Joanna

Hi Joanna and family, welcome to the board! Sounds like the whole family is involved, very nice. You might want to hot wire the tumbler to give the brother-in-law a little jolt the next time he goes to turn it off ;D hehe. (just kidding of course!) Rock haters, there's one in every crowd. Heck, around here nothing ever gets turned off. If I could hook a fan blade to the electric meter, I think it would cool the whole neighborhood. Good luck with the first load, and remember not to rush it through. Talk to ya later, Don

Greetings All, Hello Joanna and welcome to the rocktumblinghobby.com message board and to the wonderful world of lapidary! I'm pretty new at this myself, but there are several regulars who have a lot of good advice to offer. My son (almost 5) and I (a little older ) are getting quite a bit of enjoyment out of rock tumbling. My wife is not as into it as we are, but she's a bit of a nature lover herself so she is supportive. It sounds as if you and your family are all involved, that's really great having hobbies to share. Keep us posted on your progress. As for pictures, I'll try to get some to Andy as soon as I finish my first batch (green aventurine). Only one more week until it goes into the polish stage WilliamC

With the tumbler off at night. Dose the tumbling grit harden up. I would think that it would get like Cement?

Not that I have seen so far...I had to turn my tumbler off for a day and was able to start it up again the next day...I'm sure overnight isn't a bad thing but, probably more than two days it would turn into cement.

Greetings All, Ah shucks Jon you done gone and made me blush I sincerely hope that my now officially 5-year old (Happy birthday Chris!) will grow to appreciate some lessons that he can probably learn from watching his Pa do some sort of craftwork and little business. Well, when he gets himself a bit older he can start spending more time with me up at the lab I suppose, but rock tumbling is a good start to learning about nature at least, if not life. And it's fun.
