We found this guy mowing a power line right of way. He would barely look up, until I gave him a few soft wolf howls. I wonder how much browse he must consume to get the phosphorus and calcium to grow a rack. Those antlers are likely the fastest growing non-cancerous tissue in the animal kingdom. FWIW success at wildlife viewing yesterday far surpassed that of rock hounding. I may have found one laker in a pit.

Nice moose! Is this in Wisconsin or the U.P.? I always hope to see one when I'm in the U.P., but I never have.
How about a picture of the rock? Was it a maygate? That's my word for a rock that is maybe an agate.

That's a beast. I heard horns are the fastest growing tissue.

UP moose. Quite a few of them along HWY 28/41 between Ishpeming and Covington, and again on Hwy 95 south of Hwy 28/41. Watch for other people stopped and staring into the woods. We watched this guy for 10 minutes or more and not one other vehicle stopped to look. Sometimes they are out in a swamp or pond and its a dangerous circus with people waling back and forth across the road forgetting its a highway. Sometimes its a flash as they cross the road. Sometimes, like this one, they are back in the woods a bit. This one is the third one we have seen this year. No good pics of the others. My camera is one of those auto focus things. I can point it to the sky and press half way to focus on infinity. Now try to find a moose in the view finder. It will not change the zoom when held at half shutter depress. My wife handled the camera this time.
Have your wife drive and glue your nose to the window. I spotted this one while driving. I have the trained eye of a predator, one who has raised a family with plenty of wild protein. Personal finances made wild game preferred to the cuts we could afford. Never ate moose though.
If its an agate its a beauty. No fracture or hole. Fist sized. Just has that look. In a month or so it should get a window cut. The same camera will not take a macro photo, not really much sense to tease you with a blurry mess.

I only drive to the Keweenaw about once a summer. That's when I'm looking. There are a lot of big swampy clearings that look like where I'd expect to see a moose, but not yet. I'll keep looking.

We were slowly driving through a wild animal park near Hood Canal in Washington. Windows down. A moose headed our way. Quickly manually rolled up windows just in time. That big old moose tongue licked our window instead of us. Whew!

Traveled to camp and back again today. We saw moose numbers 4 and 5. Four was not liking the attention. We spotted a lady watching this bull, we pulled up and she got out to photograph. I sent the Mrs out and the moose just wasn't crazy about all the lady attention he was receiving. This young lady moved off, but didn't mind a couple of quick poses. Kind of like "Does this pose make my butt look fat?"

Thank you so much for sharing your outstanding luck to be able to view these wonderful creatures. Ugly? Only for folks that can't appreciate beauty!
