I have been resisting the change, but change must come. Got a new sweet laptop with win 10. Do any of you have a favorite site for tweaks to make it more win 7ish?

Work in a private place so you can yell & scream at Microsoft while dealing with their idiocy. Lynn

I would stick with 2k if I could. That was their best. Tweakable.

Back when I was testing Windows 10, I thought that was a good resource. Thanks! I'll go check it out.

I miss Windows 95 and fresh dino poop too. Yep too much garbage on the software. No reason for the complications and were always having to upgrade. They're making money on us.

congrads on the new laptop tela ! those machine are really remarkable and fairly inexpensive for the technology * w/ Window 10 I had to get Windows customer support for my sister p.c. actually they were pretty helpful although I had to sweet talk them into it after the support person remotely took control of the P.C and tried unsuccessfully for an hour to resolve the issue she tset up another appointment w/me at my convenience and I had a call back from Bill Gates well that what I told everyone anyway the second time was charm and the computer is still working fairly well * none of the above is to be construed as an endorsement of Win 10....mostly Linux is the poor man's choice O my sister P.C. was originally window 8 That was horrible enough Although after a little bit she got used to it and it worked well Then the Window 10 upgrade occurred and I wasn’t there to help her Somehow her Window account password got changed that was the source of the problems… Mostly

Yeah, I had no problem upgrading to Win 10. You can set it to work pretty much like older versions, with a desktop instead of the big squares. If you are using it on a laptop or tablet, you'd probably want to go with the default settings (especially if you have a touch screen). It is the most stable version of Windows I've used, and I've used 'em all. If you put any old programs back onto your new computer, you may have to use "Compatibility Mode" (right click on the program's icon to set that), and a great many of them work just fine, though they don't benefit from some of the new features that you quickly start to think are indispensible.

I've also had no issues with W10, and I'll echo what @rocks2dust said. It had a little bit different "feel" when compared to other versions, but it was nothing that couldn't be overcome. You can go to a more "classic" mode and simply work as you've known from prior Windows versions. It still has File Explorer and other options you're already familiar with. The only issue is just getting used to where to find that stuff. Granted I don't dive too deep into tweaking, but then again, I don't know what that would be. I'm a pretty competent user, so going to W10 from '07 wasn't an issue for me. I missed getting Vista and Window '08 which I'm told sucked. I say go for it if your hardware is compatible. It's all about support and the ease of staying current. Why hold onto something that won't be supported in the future? That's just me. Dave

Well, I got the initial set up done. Not bad. From everything I've heard, I thought it would be a nightmare, but it really is ok. Not much new to get used to. I don't like how you can't really turn off defender. I did set it up without all the phoning home and I don't like the friggin pop ups to buy MS stuff and I don't like the cloud thing or the signing into MS. But, that was easy enough to deal with. I don't have many older problems other than PS6 and my genealogy program. I hope they still work. Haven't gotten that far yet. Set up FF and had to stop for the day.
I have a 17" laptop which I use more or less as my desktop. I rarely run it on the battery. This one has a dedicated graphics card. First I've had in a laptop. Should make video editing easier. This one is a good upgrade from the old one. I love the backlit keyboard. I think I'm going to like it- win 10 and all.

I’m not thrilled w/ Microsoft Edge Although I use it all the time
They did away with the menu bar I’m not sure why (Or maybe someone can tell me how to turn it on?)
All those functions are now under the Hub Those 3 stupid horizontal bars in the right hand corner of the browser It where the print function is
The one thing I would turn on is the favorite bar Which you can use to display your mostly use bookmarks at the top of the browser if your not already
So Edge takes a little getting use too…

* O & I like the built in Window Defender I use it quite often
Plus it as a scan offline function Which scans for viruses when Windows is booting up very cool
And If you use another anti virus program Window Defender shuts itself off automatically
I think it a big plus in the Window 10 and one the best features
*please refer back to above reference...mostly

It is really aimed at mobile and tablet users, so they left off some otherwise useful things like minimizing the right-click choices (right-clicking, or rather the clumsy press-and-hold, isn't something that people using touch-screens do very often) and saving window real estate. They do have an option to make IE or another browser the default instead of Edge (Start/Settings/Apps/Default Apps), if you prefer. My biggest complaint about Edge is its inability to delete individual items from Auto-Complete lists, but that is another victim to the push to minimize right-click options.

Defender seems to be a pretty good program, and it's pretty light weight. No real bogging down of the computer from what I can tell. But, I am a bit concerned about some of it's malware protection, and I really do need to do some research on Defender when compared to other anti-malware programs. I managed to get "bit" by some ransomware type malware, and I ended up doing a new install of Windows. I know that no anti-malware is 100%, but it's just causing me to look around a little. Dave

Hi Tela were all wondering how your new laptop and experience with Win 10 is going ? pulling your hair out? Plus I have a some information to pass along to others perhaps unsuspecting WIN 10 users that may be experiencing the same problem. This as to do with DSL internet connection. My internet connection as been dropping sporadically. It was driving me nuts. I called my Internet provider quite a few times. Basically unplug modem- plug modem back in routine. This would fix the problem, temporarily. I also tried every command line reset of the network I could think of. Only moderate success. But the problem kept occurring. Finally I did a search on my Ethernet controller. Mine is called the ever popular Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. That’s basically the port my internet cable from the modem plugs into on the back of the PC This controller as a bug and doesn’t work properly with WIN 10. They don’t seem to have fix either. Updating driver doesn’t help. answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-networking/windows-10-ethernet-bug-realtek-pcie-gbe-family/5ece26fc-75c8-43ce-a082-b80a19a8f417?page=2#LastReplyAnyway my solution or workaround was to get a USB plug in Wireless network adaptor and connect my PC to the Internet using WI-FI. Bypass the controller. So if any one as this adapter (I think there fairly popular) and have been experiencing problem with their DSL cabled Internet connection— this this would be a problem to consider and a possible solution mohs

Haven't had too many internet problems. The machine runs fine, too. I did a slew of bench testing- hardware is good to go. It's the OS that was buggy. I have weird sporadic problems with certain windows processes hogging up all the resources. I've done a lot of researching and have changed a lot of settings. I haven't had a problem in a few days now. I have a new program that was freaking out and causing problems, too. It is Adobe Elements 14- last year's version. Should be fine, but it wasn't. I had all kinds of problems with it. Turns out on Win 10 it wants the default printer to be set as Windows pdf. OK, so I changed the default and everything has been running smoothly- so far.
I like comodo and avg for protection. I've never had a virus or anything else. I'll stick with what I know works.
