I have a piece of material from east of Ludlow that I brought home, black, rings like a bell. Definitely is not jade as I can break it. Hackly break.
Sending some to Donald

Scott, I can't tell you how many sledge hammers we broke on jade boulders at Porterville. That stuff is tough and some of the boulders on one hill were huge!!!! Our best efforts couldn't even get a piece off them. The best came from the old jade mine, Janoco Mine I think or maybe Janoko. The rancher bulldozed the site for us and we got some real nice jade there. The best has areas where I think there are bright green chromium inclusions but magnetite inclusions make black spots in some of it...Mel

@shotgunner , Got the Raman info back tonight. It pretty much bears out the results of the IR Spectroscopy without all the detail (my friend did it as a freebie and I'm sure she didn't spent a whole lot of time on it). Here's what she wrote:
"I could not detect any zoisite in your thulite. It appears to be a rock with diopside, actinolite…I couldn’t get a hit on the pink portion. At first I suspected calcite. I used hardness points BUT pink > 5. I suspect feldspar, but I can’t prove it."
Short and sweet -- that's all I've got.

just as an add on to this thread, there is a mine in the Harrison area of the lower Fraser valley BC that produces some excellent thulite if we're talking about N.A. occurances
