Becoming a little overwhelmed. There are so many specific names for all of the patterns in Jasper. Some are known by the location found, some by the pattern, some both.
Is anyone aware of a “cheat sheet” with photos describing the many characteristics of Jasper and the accepted names for each characteristic/location?
Just when I think I know the name of a pattern, someone posts here with a different name.
What is the different between Picture Jasper and Ocean Wave Jasper?
If a specific pattern is given a location name in Idaho, let’s say, and I find an almost identical stone in Wisconsin, what should that pattern be called?
Also, what if a rock has the characteristics of Jasper, but is obviously a fossil coral? Is it Coral or Jasper? If I find a rick here almost identical to a petrified wood I found in Arizona, what is it? No petrified wood like that known to be here.
I know chalcedony is the catch all term for some agates, Jaspers and Cherts. But I there really a difference between Jasper and Chert? Especially if the Jasper does not have significant patterns?
Three different colors, ie gray, red and yellow, Jasper mixed with Quartz, rock that is Agatized Jasper? I could go on.
Just trying to learn how to name what I am finding. I find all the expertise here amazing and have learned a lot. Just wondering what the experts have to say on this. Thanks.
Photo thumbs below with what I think they might be, or am clueless on what they should be called.
The first two were represented as Picture Jasper when I purchased them in the 1980’s in New Mexico.
Basic Yellow Jasper from Wisconsin, with hints of blue and red?
Yellow, Pink and orange Wisconsin Jasper with some pink druzy Quartz?
Gray and Pink Wisconsin Jasper with some druzy.
Wisconsin yellow, gray, red and pink with druzy.
Ocean Jasper
Yellow Jasper with Quartz.
?
Next one has three photos. Something I have been intrigued about since finding. Inside looks like some type of fossil or Quartz, but outside looks like sandstone on one side and Jasper on the other. Some Oolites I could not photograph. Any thoughts?
Sorry for the thumbs. I might be able to do a Flickr Album if needed. Appreciate any comments and am hoping this might be of help for some in the future. Feel free to post photos of other Jaspers with ID info in this thread. Noticed some members are posting photos of Jaspers for ID. Thanks as always.
