An initial thought was hypersthene. Another possibility would be psilomelane.

I'd say psilomelane too. Sometimes called black malachite. Should polish out real silvery and will turn your water very black. pic: ...Mel

Another vote for Crown of Silver psilomelane. Just grind a little. If it turns the water black and coats your fingers black it's psilomelane. It can yield some great cabs though -- it's worth the messiness of cutting.
Your slabs will produce bands; to get the bull's-eye effect shown in Mel's image you'd need to cut it in the opposite direction.

I fully concur....psilomelane. many thanks for all your input. Cheers (slabs were already cut when I got them, too bad they didnt orient the rough differently as you suggest gemfeller .... but I am sure they will make dandy cabs as they are...)
