I am selling jewelry and rocks at a huge local event this weekend. Set up my special activity for children. A plate of various rocks. Each child can pick out one that looks interesting to them. I tell them what it is, where it is from and what it is used for. popular for the children and parents. I keep the little ones busy while the parents browse in peace. I was impressed with the 50 children that participated today. The first rocks to go were all the Amethyst and pet wood. Next were multicolored quartz. Then the fossil corals. One child was excited when I sowed her that a magnet stuck to the granite she selected.
Most of the children were amazed where some of the rocks had come from and what they were used for. Some parents even were getting into it. A Mom old her son to show me what he had found in the driveways on the grounds. She wondered if I could identify. A very proud 6 year old, dug about 12 rocks from his pockets. Lots of nice multicolored Jaspers. A few corals. Multicolored quartz.
Looking forward to the next few days.
Sales were higher than expected for day 1.

Wonderful young rockhound story. I also have a recent one. I have lots of 20-30 year old friends Many at that age suffer marital problems and I get lots of time with younger children due to parents being in tizzies and needing a sitter. I took a brother and a sister out rock hunting on their property in Colorado a few times. Usually found some small but interesting rocks. I also would give them polished stones, their choice if they did something for someone or for me. 2 days ago the 8 year old girl presented and gifted me with her latest find. A six inch terminated quartz crystal. I didn't want to take it but she was adamant. Almost made me cry because she used to be such a selfish little dear but with her mother gone from the house she needed other people and I was it. She rock hounds by herself these days. A much changed young woman of 8 years old.

The atmosphere at the event is so open and trusting. Small groups of children, 6-12 years old often wander by them selves. Some of these children keep coming back with their finds for me to identify. One young boy from another state brought me a Jasper he had found, Mother in tow. He asked me if it was a Jasper. He was so proud. Mom then purchased some items. I love having the children return with their finds. The roads through the venue are loaded.

My son is really, really good with kids, so he enjoys it a lot, too.
