Used to find that on the beaches in Ventura County and in the hills towards LA county. We called it siliceous sinter, kind of a layered volcanic sediment that has been agatized or opalized. Some of the Chumash points are made of it.....Mel

The patterns look like Howardite, but the colors don't. Lynn

Interesting observation Lynn. I've always wondered if Howardite is a variety of siliceous sinter that simply was deposited in an area more rich in iron salts that made it more colorful. I've certainly picked up sinter beach cobbles that really resembled Howardite as far as pattern goes....Mel

Our class boss calls that "felsite" for it's felsic origin.
It's black grey in my area

Thanks all. As I said I found it in a box of very old collection stuff that had been sitting out in the sun for eons. I have to admit to kind of hoping it was something along the lines of Howardite that had faded from the sun. I chipped a corner and it's no brighter inside than it is outside ... dag nabbitt
