I got a defective slab grabber from Ron. You could see it was not right when he packed it. I wrote him about the problem, and he said: I AM NOT AUTHORIZED by Lortone to do warrantee work. Contact them at equpment@lortone.com or 425-493-9494. Any returns or exchange must go to them. Ron Well, Ron's response was pretty poor. (BTW the # he gave is a fax number.) He just told me that all returns and exchanges had to go to Lorotone as a warrenty issue. I am going to ship the item back to RON, and file with PayPal for a full refund. Basically instead of returning a defective (yes, the defect is plain to see) to them, he decided to sell it to me, and then tell me it was my problem. Do not deal with Ron's Rocks!

Lorotone says they will replace the part. I have let Ron know that 1) he might give me $1 credit to cover the postage to Lorotone, 2) it is still not to late for him to ssay he is sorry he did not notice the defect, or that he sent such a kurt message, or just sorry that I was inconvenienced.
I will report back if he makes any amends.

Let us know. Not good that he just shoves his problems off on you rather than returning it himself.

Rons is our local shop here in so. Calif. I know him pretty well and have had good luck buying from him but have had no such warrantee problems. Don't really know how it's supposed to work. I think my Workforce saw and my tumblers say you have to return it to the factory for such work but a slab grabber, gee if it's defective, I'd think he'd just replace it. Oh well, not the way I'd do business but his choice I guess. seems like a good way to discourage repeat buyers though...mel

Yeah Mel, but if you opened the WorkForce and it was missing the blade guard, you would take it right back to HomeDepot and they would replace it right at the customer service desk. If the guard broke after the first day of use, thats a different story. Heck, if he just would have presented it differently. How about: Sorry you had problems, I should have noticed that. I can replace it, but I think it would be faster if you sent it to Lorotone. They are very good about these things, and the shipping would be the same, and possibly the turnaround will be quicker. Here is the phone number. Ask for Jim. Let me know if this is OK with you, or if there is any problem. Same result, big difference in how you put it. He can't act so surprised if he sends out broken stuff, offers no apology, and tells people to pursue the warrenty with no explanation, context, or assurance that he will step up fi needed. (BTW - Jim at Lorotone says he has known Ron for years and he is just like that. (I assume he meant poor social skills or such. Maybe he is nicer in person.)

Daniel: Ron can be nice but for the most part, he's a pretty crusty dude *L*. Stories about his behavior always seem to be going around. I pretty much don't pay much attention to them but I'm afraid he has a bit of a reputation for being cranky and abrupt. Most of us who deal with him just realize how he is and deal with it. Guess we can't all be sweethearts huh?. Actually he seems to do pretty good business in spite of any lack in social skills. S*..mel

I have dealt with Ron's Rocks several times and always thought him to be very fair. I got one defective Nova wheel from him, it was when Diamond Pacific had a defective batch, and let him know. He shipped me out a new one right away, paid the postage and didn't even ask for the old one back. I'm very well pleased with him. I buy all my Genie wheels from him. He is cheaper and easy to deal with. I just ordered two more two days ago. Love the 220 Nova wheel and I don't think you can get it from anyone else. Trish

Well Trish,
I am glad to hear that Ron is not always a problem. Maybe he is better with customers buying more expensive items, or maybe he was having a bad day. I have had folks at Lortone as well as Mel attest to the fact that he is a bit crusty.
I am so annoyed that he gave me so little respect or courtesy that I will press throuhg PayPal to get my shipping costs (to Lortone) back. I should not have to pay for that. It is bad enough I paid for "Priority" and am having to wait 2-3 weeks for the damm thing to be useable. Thats slower than media-mail.
ANd, I just don't plan to do any more business with Ron. There are enough friendly vendors out there, and life is short. If one or two folks reading htis think twice about buying from him, thats just karma.

I've bought from Ron several times also, all have been very good. Quality of product and shipping have been the best I've seen on Ebay. Sorry to hear about your bad time - that would give me a bad taste too.

and Ron continues to be a cretin ...
I am glad not everybody has had a bad time with Ron. I mean, I would not wish a bad time on anyone here. But, I find it hard to hear about other folks good experiences because it undercuts the consumer action I am taking here. I am nt trying to hush anyone. But frankly, unless you have had to return an item, resolve a dispute, or work out some issue with Ron, I am not sure how relevant any "good reports" are. I guess it is somewhat useful to know that in the normal course of things he has good prices and quality, but I am not talking about the normal course of things. I am talking about the freak-monster that came out as soon as the least little thing went wrong.
Today Lortone apparently shipped my replacement part. I did not hear this from Lortone, but Ron told payPal that it had shipped. He also suggested I had refused to send the item to him, which is so frustrating after he repeatedly demanded that I send it directly to Lortone. He also started calling it a "so-called" defect because he had not seen it himself. Although I had clearly stated that I would update the payPal claim as soon as I saw how things worked out with Lortone, Ron went and escalated things from a PayPal dispute to a PayPal claim before I even heard from Lortone, much less even got the part. So, I did not get to enter my final comments into the case file.
I had to call PayPal customer service and wait on hold a long time just to get an email address where I could send remarks that will hopefully get into the file. From beginning to end, Ron has really been a butt-head.
All I can say is that although others report no problems with Ron, I can only warn people in the strongest term to avoid Ron's Rocks. It is possible that he is great until something goes wrong. I agree he has low prices. Since he sells name brands, I imagine the quality is good too. What I am saying is that the man lacks social skills, does not give a hoot about customer service, and if you call him on his behavior, he gets ugly.
Lots of folks can be good sellers when all goes smoothly. I think it is a real test of a seller's character when things don't go smoothly. And Ron has failed this test. Not only failed big time, but repeatedly failed at each successive twist and turn of this ordeal.
Even the folks who kinda like him have described him as kurt or crusty. Jim at Lortone said, "oh, thats Ron. He just liek that." Well, I'd like to add nasty to the list.
I will say again, before I put this whole thing behind me. Avoid Ron's Rocks!!

Well said, Daniel. Never dealt with the man personally, but after reading all the posts here I'm not even going to give him a shot. I'm not looking for all warm fuzzies during a business transaction, but if there is an alternative, I'll go with nice over crusty any day. I'll even pay more for it.

More people should call out behaviour like this in the marketplace. It helps those who are new to the hobby not to get ripped off and taken advantage of.
I was new to the hobby when I arrived here. I made a couple purchases from recommendations or "heads up" type posts here. Lets just say Ive been taken advantage of several times and still to this day, I get sick just thinking about them. I havent even touched a rock for a couple months, and dont even have the desire to. The only nice transactions I ever had were with Dan , and I appreciated it very much !
Hopefully I can get back into this sometime in the future, but right now, the couple boxes of driveway fill I do have can just wait to be thrown out later.
So, Kudos Dan, dont take any crap. I guess some people just think they deserve our money , without having to be of any service or satisfaction whatsoever.

Thanks, Daniel. I can't remember the circumstances, but the minute I saw the name I had negative vibes. Old people are like that sometimes - memory of bad experiences fade, leaving behind only a scar tag to help in avoiding a repeat.
