Thinking of taking the plunge and picking up a decent point and shoot camera for our outings where I don't want to haul a bigger camera around . Sometimes at a beach where things tend to get wet or crawling around on rocky hillsides , a big camera can be a distraction . Just wondering what others are using and maybe some pros and cons of different models . I'm just looking for something like a semi advanced model . I can do the research but real user reviews are more reliable than the paid reviews . So if anyone has any pointers or dos and don'ts feel free to comment . My list of must haves is a short and basic list . Just looking for something that will do what my DSLR will do at a fraction of the cost and in a smaller package . Oh , and have a big image sensor for low light . I know , pretty unrealistic expectations . Thanks for any input .

Best performing point and shoot I ever owned was a Panasonic Lumix. Leica lens. Expensive though. Variety of costing. My early model did not like sand; maybe they have sealed them better.

my wife has a Nikon d3100 and a canon rebel t3 damned if I can take a good closeup with either of them. could just be me and my total ineptness with cameras.

A good macro lens might help you out , I don't have one either . A lot of my worst photos happen after I haven't used the camera for awhile and I let the auto settings take the photo .

Rich. Picked up a disposable one for $200 I always drop them off a horse, run over them or they get stepped on in a bar so I don't go the high dollar big hassle ones. The latest is a canon power shot. 360 hs. 12 X zoom and takes the pictures that work for my needs. Fits in my pocket and if I break it don't break the bank. Easy to use and takes decent rock pictures. wigglinrocks

By the time I make up my mind all the major companies will have a few new models available . And the head scratching will continue . Not sure if I want to be locked into auto settings and haven't really looked into what settings the p&s cameras have

Not sure if I want to be locked into auto settings and haven't really looked into what settings the p&s cameras have I have bought a half dozen of those type point and shoots from pawn shops. $25-35 and usually get the battery charger too. That is way more disposable than $200! Speechless

I like my Canon cameras. Currently still on my S5is. Screen could be bigger but it also still has an optical viewfinder for those bright days when you can't see any screen. Like the 12x mechanical zoom too.

I also require actual batteries, none of that needing a recharge at the worst possible moment miles from the charger.

I have to do some checking and see what the P&S types do and don't do . I want to have some control of the settings .

Lots of factors. No decision shopping for the last P+S. After three failed from the elements - sand - water or impact I got the TG-4. 7 foot drop rating, water proof, sealed trap doors, internal zoom. Not much zoom because it does not protrude out of the frame.

Not impressed with a lot of photos from those super zooms anyway , but haven't seen huge amounts of pics from them , could be operator error . I am in no hurry so will keep looking and comparing . From what I am seeing for practical features , thinking an entry level DSLR might be more suitable for my uses . Like I mentioned , no rush to get the wrong hardware .

For a pocket camera that takes real good pictures, I like my Canon powershot A590 is, real cheap on ebay these days. it is 8 megapixels. I also have powershot SD750 this picture was taken with the 590 and reduced in size to post on hee. is 7.1 megapixels.
