"Hadronyche is a genus of venomous spiders found in Australia."
No way it could it be an Australian Funnel Web ? Looks similar.

jamesp ...some info about the "variety" of your spider. Spider in this article looks exactly like yours. Supposedly we have them in CA, but I have never encountered one. Good call @shotgunner . I learn a little bit about something every time I come here. Now I just have to remember the stuff. Dave

Definitely a trapdoor spider.
from Spiderzrule website
An old school spider, common name Purse web Spider. Family name (Atypidae) references that they are "atypical tarantulas." Purse web spiders are accomplished ambush predators that spend most of their time in a sock-like, silken retreat on the ground from where they kill their prey. Guess that is why they are not seen often. jamesp ...some info about the "variety" of your spider. Spider in this article looks exactly like yours. California version - California trapdoor spider, Bothriocyrtum californicum
While I have never encountered the spider, I have run across their "trap-door" burrows a time or two. These photos taken in a field a couple blocks from my home in Spring Valley, CA.
jamesp , show them some respect. Though not venomous, they can inflict a nasty bite!
Second chance

Thanks for the ID.
Darn thing has great vision. Never seen a spider that can see a few feet away. Nor one that hangs on when it bites. More like a crab.

How high can it jump? CAN it jump? It never did jump Pat. But it always rotated facing you. If you walked circles around it would never let you get behind it. Had it jumped toward me it would have jumped only once - that would be sudden death for that spider. What's you talkin about ! I put him down on the hot Georgia asphalt and he scurried along quickly. Thought maybe the heat would have damaged him- not. He had mine and big buddy Alan the Welder's attention. He really got our attention when we touched him with a stick and he clamped onto it like a stone crab. Had to remove his death clamp with another stick. Glad the Jean Machine and Shotgunman figured it out.

A stretchy 12 inch rubber band absolutely dissolves flies. Stretch it up, aim at fly, and let go of stretched end. Admire the after-vaporization components and various colored juices.
