These are some of the agates and jasper that I cabbed this month. I am a lifelong insomniac and work has been incredibly stressful the last month. I have been putting my insomnia to use by grinding out work frustrations..
"Maybe" Brazilian Agate - these are from what was a nice slab before I tested it to see which was harder; my concrete floor or the slab..
Cab 1
Cab 2
Brazilian Agate - I like the color composition in this one.
Stone Canyon - pretty material and fun to work, though I cut the dome too high on this one.
Lavic - this was from a piece of scrap. Rather than toss it in the scrap bucket I decided would it make an unusual cab
Burro Creek Agate - a perenial favorite of mine. I really like the rich lavendar color with the golden brown veins
Black Plume Agate - not sure what variety this is. It was fairly puncky with a lot of pitting and vugs but polished out fairly well.
Oregon Thunderegg - this is from a double nodule. Unfortunately, there was a fracture where the two joined and the portion of the second egg broke on the trim saw.
Tahoma Agate set - future earrings and pendant. These may be a repost. I touched them up to try and correct the shapes. They were off a bit.
Gem Silica and chatoyant Malachite agate - I have posted this one before but I went back over it this month trying to remove a scratch. Not a great photo but it is really nice in person.
Ankara Stick Agates - I really do enjoy working with stick agates quite a bit. The agate coming from Turkey is really nice with fairly clear chacedony and well defined sticks.
Stick Agate 1 - this was and end cut from a small nodule. It was too good to pass on cabbing.
Stick agate 2 - this was another peice of saw scrap that convinced me it wanted to be an odd shaped cab...
Stick Agate 3 - I think is from a different region in Turkey than the other stick agate.
Red Tube Carnelian - very cool material to work with. I am 99.9% certain this is heat treated to give it the red colors but, dang, this stuff is neat!
Carnelian 1 - this cab is probably a good example of why I should consider using templates..it looks like a smashed toe...
Carnelian 2
There is a lot going on in both of the next two cabs.
Carnelian 3 - cut and shaped this one
Carnelian 4 - this is a polished end cut with the edges left natural
Mexican Fire Agate
Fire agate 1- No fire..so is it a Mexican fireless agate? - I have always liked the color palette in the fire agates whether they have fire or not. The material takes a beautiful polish too.
Fire agate 2 - not much fire in this one but still a pretty stone.
Aztec Lace Agate - these are from two different agates
Cab 1 - I found several pieces of this material a few months ago and have been slowly working my through them. The color is richer than most I have worked with.
Cab 2 - more of a specimen than a cab. This is an end cut that I kept the natural edge on.
Montana Agate - one of my all around favorite agates to work with. The variation in patterns are fun and they always take a beautiful polish.
Cab 1 - I was listening to The Who when I saw this trim piece. The Seeker "looking in at each other"...
Cab 2 - was going for the bi-color line centered in the cab but missed it a bit =\
Cab 3 - single dendrite, somewhat phallic..what's not to like lol
Cab 4 - classic Montana
Ocean Jasper - a few different varieties for rockjunquie
OJ 1 - this may be a repost. I have been chasing scratches out of this one for a while...a few the orbs in this one also popped out while cabbing it =\
OJ 2 - nice peice, unfortunately, this one also liked to throw orbs at me when I was working with it. The rounded end tossed two orbs off, one on either side, which is what gave it the odd shape on that end.
OJ 3 - classic translucent OJ with floating orange orbs
Backlit
Psilomelane Plume Agate, I think..? - Not positive on this one. It has metallic shimmer like Psilomelane but it is in a brown host rock. I am not too familiar with the varieties Psilomelane comes in. Any help nailing the ID on this would be great. I would like to get more of it..
Cathederal Agate - okay, yes, very odd shaped cab. It is a mix of trying something new and then trying to repair the cab when some fracture lines appeared...
Del Rey Agate / Purple Passion Agate - this is an end cut with the natural edge left in place
Laguna Agate 1 - polished end cut. It is a little fracture'y (yep, I made up a word) but it is a neat little specimen.
Laguna Agate 2 - Not the best cut, the dome is almost a ridge. I will probably redo this one..
Laguna Agate 3 - under neath the reflection there is a random forest green "line" which is pretty cool.
Laguna Agate 4 - end cut with natural edge
Laguna Agate 5 - I left the natural shape as best I could but took off all the outer material. I really like the soft pink hues in this one.
Laguna Agate 5 - full slice of a small nodule with natural edges
Coyamito Agate 1 - another end cut. It hassome vugs on the side but a great pattern
Coyamito Agate 2 - ...end cut to the next cab
Coyamito Agate 3 - this one came out real nice..
White Lace Agate - pretty stone with various hues of white and off white.
Orpheus Agate from Bulgaria - this is unique type agate and found only in a small region in Bulgaria. What makes it unique is the mineral which creates the greens is Celadonite. To date; agates with a similar composition have not been found anywhere else. This cab is just under 4" long.
Rough slab
Finished cab 1
Finished cab 2
Orpheus Agate 2 - this slice was pitted, vugged, and undercut on every wheel..still, this one shows the celadonite banding. The shape of the cab is roughly the shape of the agate slice. I tried to keep it as natural as I could.
Laguna Agate - okay, this one is probaby my favorite of the month. It is another end cut that I took a chance on trying to cab. Frankly, I was stunned that it didn't break. It is pretty fragile. For some reason I chuckle every time I look at it lol
If anyone made it all the way through these photos; thanks for looking!
