I'm new to the board and just getting started in the rock tumbling hobby. I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent supplier of the various grits in the Austin/Round Rock, Texas area. Shipping these days is getting very expensive.
Thanks!

Usually compared to retail packaging and mark-ups, shipping grit from online suppliers still winds up being significantly cheaper than buying kits locally, works that way for me anyway....

Dan
Thanks for the welcome and the link. I'll make sure and look her up. I ended up ordering several items from the Rock Shed and the Stone Tool Depot otherwise known as Miles Supply.
The prices I was getting in Austin were quite a bit more than what I could buy grit and supplies online. I should have everything next week. Shawn at the Rock Shed has been great to deal with.

David, The RockShed is probably the best place to get tumbling supplies on the internet...so you did good there. The Smithville rock shop has great prices on rough and lapidary supplies. Loreen sold me a 12" MK 301 diamond saw blade at her cost...I just paid for shipping. She's not in the business to get rich...she just makes 'enough' and that's all she's interested in. It's just nice to have someone you can trust.... there are a lot of shady dealers and vendors out there....
BTW - Recently a few of the Houston RTH members went to the Houston Gem show and then for a rock hunt after wards at Lake Livingston. We sort of kicked around the idea of more rock hunting trips.... My folks live in Bastrop and have a nice place on some land there.. If we ever decide to get together there I'll let you know and maybe you could join us as well....
Take care.... Dan

Dan Sounds like that would be fun. It's nice to know someone in the business you can trust. So many scams out there. Shawn with the rockshed has been great to deal with. With the discounts he gave me on my rock and grit order I ended up getting two Lortone 33b tumblers delivered for $78 dollars each. I don't think I did to bad...

That's a SWEET deal!! Shawn is great! Did you get some of the Aventurine from Brazil? I have some and it's the best G. Aventurine I've ever seen....dark rich color with tiny little Pyrite inclusions... Shines up great!
Where abouts are you located David? Closer to Austin or Round Rock.... I love RR... Went to the Symphony hall there not to long ago...what a cool place.

I did get some of that rock within the mixes that I ordered. I didn't order one of the larger lots of this type. I'll put it on the list for next time. I live just outside the Round Rock city limits not to far from Dell Computer or the Dell Diamond. It's a nice area but getting crowded... I worked for Dell for about 11 years.

No kidding... I'm a client support analyst (glorified PC tech...lol) for an intl. Co. here in Houston...we're a Dell shop. I basically manage client architecture...we have about 4000 WS clients world wide. I've been using the Image Builder program for about a year now....it's pretty slick. You a baseball fan? How 'bout those Astros!!

I have to agree with all that recommended The Rock Shed. I just got my quarterly box of grits ( the grinding kind not the yummy kind) and I also splurged this time and bought the 5lbs of mixed tumbling rock. Very nice selection.
