After smashing about 20 rocks, I have about a pound of rock "grit" that I swept up and bagged. Anybody have an opinion if this stuff would work as coarse grit for stage 1?

I don't think it would be worth it. Silicon carbide is super-hard, super-sharp, and comes graded into a narrow size range. I don't think home-grit could offer any of those properties, except for maybe the sharpness.
