I asked ebay seller therockshop27 a question about combined shipping and got an initial confusing response, and when I followed up to ask more questions, got a whole lot of flack.
He sells a modest grade of jasper-agate that seems to be locally collected. But the parcels are all 8-9 pounds and just say "standard flat-rate shipping", and there is no mention of combined shipping - either way.
When I asked he told me that his boxes were "stuffed" and there was no combined shipping.
I told him I was puzzled because 9lbs seemed like a lot less than many other were getting into flat-rate boxes, and asked him if in fact this was a USPS Flat-rate Priority Mail box. I was polite.
He never answered about the Priority Mail, got really defensive that I mentioned what others fit into boxes, and more or less told me to buzz off.
It was a slow day at work, so I emailed back to assure him my intentions had been friendly, and point out that these things could be more clearly stated in the listing. I again assured him my intentions were friendly, and that if any wording had made him defensive that it was unintentional. His response to that seemed to just go off the deep end.
He suggested I was a scammer, or a pissant who moaned and groaned about shipping, and someone who tried to get reimbursements - all without any actual knowledge of me. I think he has had problems before and this was a sensitive topic. Keep in mind, I never argued with him - I just asked for clarifications and let him know why I was confused.
Here is an excerpt from his last message:
For what it is worth, the questions were legitimate, and I made no requests.
Anyway, the rocks look to have a lot of thin edges, inclusions/pits, and maybe more like quartz than agate. The opening bid is less than $1/lb so it could still be worthwhile - but it seems silly to pay as much for shipping as for the rocks - not to mention the risks of dealing with someone who seem to be so defensive and rude. There are plenty of other rock sellers out there.
But hey, maybe it is me. Maybe he doesn't like the way I type or something. He seems to have good feedback, although mostly for seling non-rock stuff. I'm just stating my concerns.

...your the type of person that moans and groans about shipping getting it as cheap as possible for you , then when it shows up all busted to pieces, will expect the seller to reimburse you. im sick of messing with scammers and when people bicker over a couple of dollars instead of having things packaged up right thats when i get suspicious. I package things the way i feel i would like them packaged not thrown in a box and taped up, and forgotten about. If it works for you keep going, because i personally dont care whether i sell 20.00 worth of rocks or not. I collect because i enjoy it and dont know what i have until i get home as these are dug out of the ground covered in dirt. I keep some and sell some so if there are sellers out there that you would rather buy from please please bother them with your questions and requests....
