Well, in another thread Jugglerguy showed us a video of a stone egg being made on a lathe. This peeked my interest. A discussion was had. Advise of an inexpensive wood lathe was given and this seemed ideal. Call it God, serendipity, law of attraction.... Whatever makes you happy, but today I found a working example of one of these wood lathes at a garage sale. $40! It's 14x40. Way too long. I'll utilize the bolted on end pieces after I cut the rails and pan shorter. Drill the rails and bolt them back on. I'll be spending a few weeks finalizing other equipment we have made and working on this next.

Thanks Rob. I have so many ideas in my head. Have to write them down.
#1) shorten rails
#2) make shield to protect motor and electronics
#3) order chuck (done) $75
#4) make table
#5) make water catching tray for top of shield and under the lathe.
#6) lazy Susan under lathe?

I usually wake up trying to figure out what I am going to do for the day. You are far ahead of me. Way to go. Dave

Without seeing the end of the bed I may be totally off base, but I'm wondering if you could unbolt rails cut 90 degree notches where you want the pan to end use a chunk of wood and c camps as a bending brake to bend the pan up weld notches use now upright end of pan for part of, support for, a spray shield, perhaps even exhaust hood. Looks like an excellent starting point and... Were you wearing a mask when you stole that thing?

I always wanted to try something like this for making pens. still working on drilling the jade pen blanks so that kind of thing is still a ways off. for 40 bucks I would have snatched it up on the off chance I might get that far.

The switch was bad. He ghetto teched it so the switch is always on. He did fine.

This is a begining lathe for bowls and table legs. Definitely would not be suitable for a long drill as you described. But still... I'll skip beer for 2 weeks and be ahead. Kidding! Not skipping beer!

#7) www.dictionary.com/browse/pique I visualize turning the shortened lathe so I can see into bowls as I turn them.
