It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood, A neighborly day for a beauty. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?...
I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you. I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

Your manthing had a great idea! (Funny, guys can do that every once in a while, when you are least expecting it.) Your saw would NEVER have been happy sitting on the dirt. Those look like the peel and stick vinyl tiles? Only thing I would have done differently is get an inexpensive sheet of vinyl flooring, and stick it down with some real glue. I've had the P&S, unless you get the wood sealed really good, they tend to come loose on you over time. If any of the cutting oil gets on them, that'll hasten their destruction. What accidentalrockhound said - Props to your other half! Great that he helps you out like that! Jean

Until I recalled seeing the cat, I was tempted to suggest building a shallow box (x2x4 height) for the saw to sit in with an inch or two of oil-dry or some other absorbent to keep any oil drips off of the floor. However cats present a problem using this material with unintended inclusions. I have a small plant drip plate with oil dry under each of the 4 legs on my saw and that keeps the oil off the floor and from being tracked into the house. Nice setup. Enjoy.

amygdule ...well...maybe. Lol. I posted a picture of one of the slabs and it sparked a lot of questions about the saw itself. Follow up pictures didn't narrow anything down. Some stated it had a hood like a Royal but the sled/vise/bottom wasn't. The label says Belmont which was apparently a Rock and Gem company out of Portland back during the rockhounding heyday. No one can remember if they built their own or just sold saws.

I worked on a saw with a vice like that in the past year or so. Now I know what it is too.

Nice saw area. Open is good, saws can be messy and put out vapors. I got mine under an open shed. Mine is sitting just off the slab on the ground. Lots of oil has landed on the ground over the years. Accidental spillage happens, dripping oil, etc. Soaked into the ground. Keeps the Georgia termites away. Wood making ground contact is attacked by termites in a hurry here. A curse. The EPA would have a fit.
Clever rock gripper set up. Integrated into vice, dang. Another project, got to modify my Covington same way. Got to. Classic saw. Watch out for those open v-belts, got guards for them ? They are right at shirt tail/manhood level and at your operating positions. Please install guards.
Liking the use of galvanized metal, best way to finish steel. Should be standard on all rock saws. Skip the paint, oil will get the best of it.

Yeah, my only wish is that the grabbing bolts/screws were just a tiny bit longer. We have already been talking about maybe trying to find a machinist that could make an integrated vice like that. I know that those aren't at all common so it's very unlikely the next saw we get will have one. And there most definitely will be a next saw, lol. We have been talking about getting covers for the open belts. The guy the refurbed this one for us did quite a bit of mods and the covers no longer fit. We are kicking around different ideas, but in the meantime being super careful.

Yeah these are already as long as they can be in this particular vice.

Nice picture series. I enjoyed seeing what you did. Most oil on the floor problems come from oil finding its way down a leg of the saw and onto the floor. I just set each leg of my saws in a small stainless steel pet food/water bowl from a discount store. They keep the oil off the floor ver nicely.

You can keep a set of longer screws on hand and just take the short ones out in the spots you want to use and screw the longer ones in for the cutting session. Then when you are finished just take them off and stick it in a drawer until the next time.
