I won 3 auction on ebay for faceted stones each at $9.99. The auctions all state that shipping is standard flat rate of $9.65 with an additional $4/item on combined shipping within 7 days. It also says insurance is included in the cost of the shipping & handling. So my invoice comes and it says:
Subtotal - $29.97 Standard Flat Rate Shipping - $22.95 Insurance (required) - $6.00 Total - $58.92
Payment Instructions said "You are entitled to a Seller discount on Shipping and Handling for two additional items(S&H $4 per additional item for those 2)Please enter a -7.30 in the Seller discounts... box and click recalculate, this should update your combined items total, yourS&H for "Standard..." is really $15.65(22.95-7.30). Shipping Cost has two parts, Shipping and Handling($7.65)and Shipping Insurance(required,$2.00 per item) Please email me for more info,no more room here."
Can I not add or something? I get $17.65 anyway I add my figures.
I swear normally I'd just roll my eyes and pay it to not stir up a stink but this just got under my skin. They just went all around the world to find a way to stick extra costs in there & try to confuse someone when the auctions were clear as a bell on these costs.
But instead this is what i sent: "Hi, I don't want to have a problem here regarding the shipping but all 3 of my items say shipping is $9.65 insurance included with rate discounted to $4/item on combined orders. So I get a total of $17.65 shipping with insurance included. I know ebay has a new shipping policy to guard against over-inflated shipping prices or sellers trying to avoid ebay fees. I'm not opposed to people having a handling fee but your auctions don't state that you do so I just need to know how exactly you are arriving at your figures. I sell also on ebay. I choose to not put hidden costs into my shipping fees but everyone is not me and I'm cool with that. But I do expect you to stick with what you quoted in the auction. You are already making money on those figures without jacking it up some more. There is no $2/item insurance fee if you stick them all in the same bubble mailer. Your total shipping cost with insurance will come to less than $3. I am not at all opposed to paying you the $17.65."
Are the holidays just getting to me or would y'all have said something too? The last package I received that was similar was mailed to me for less than $50 60 cents postage.
Kim
I corrected my big boo boo up there - postage was two 24 cent stamps and a 4 cent stamp.

You are dead on with your questioning it and your email. Lets hope it was a screwed up automated invoice.

Unless you really really want those stones, don;t budge. I would even be prepared to walk away. Let him relist. If it comes to it you can each send each other negs, but may not come to that. It is just that I would have serious doubts about the quality of the stones after seeing these shady aspects of their operation.

Boy I hate that sort of dealer! To begin with, I think it's unethical using shipping handling and insurance as a money making tool while cheating E-Bay out of their final sales fees. E-bay should hunt down and drop that sort of seller from their site post haste! I usually don't buy from folks that are unreasonable in this aspect of their sales. You're right too, you should not have to pay insurance three times if the stones are all going in the same package. Heck his shipping cost is highway robbery to begin with. The way he figures his insurance is adding insult to injury. If it's included in his shipping cost quote, you should not have to pay it three times!!!!....mel

Whoa!!!!!!!!! Did he invoice you or did you use the checkout??? Mine I combine all I can get and just charge the $8 flat rate fee. BUT for some reason when buyers use the checkout on multiple wins, say 3 wins at $8.00 flat rate the shipping triples to $24.00 and so many will just pay, then I have to go into paypal and refund their $16 over pmt...So maybe its a glitch but it sounds like he is charging $4 per item handling??? Insurance is $1.30 per every $50 coverage plain and simple and one can not inflate that as there is no extra work...Man I got nailed like that once. I won't say who it was but I was so mad I could have chewed up rocks and spit out sand!!! Charged me a shipping rate on every win yet he said he combined. When I got the crazy over charge I asked him what about the combined rate and he said he did combine, they are all in one box!!! Needless to say I never shopped there again. I sure hope things work out but if that is not a mistake I say report him as that is unfair. Best Wishes-Dale Rhode

Hey Kim, I know what you're saying and I agree with you. I've really been having a problem with this "shipping and handling" thing with eBay. I'm getting to where I don't trust anyone. I bought a computer chip a while back, and after a month I went after the seller. He was guaranteed by Pay Pal, and when they sided with me, he finally shipped me what I payed for. And you can't leave negative feedback, because he will just leave bad feedback for you and you suffer as well. It's really not a very good setup. Too bad, because people really do need a way to sell to each other without being screwed and tattooed!
Ron
ps. That tattooing part is all right, but not he rest of it!

I've said before and I will say it again, Get TWO ebay accounts to use. One for buying and one for selling. Feedback is not a popularity contest!! When a seller is dishonest, give them the feedback they deserve. If buyers would not worry so much about Neg feedback they could post honest feedback. I have a couple of Negs on my buyer feedback and it doesn't bother me a bit. I think I get better service because of it. Sellers know, if they look at what I have given/received, that I am not afraid to give what is deserved. I have even received email from other ebayers in support of pointing out a sellers misleading/dishonest shipping practices (one a member and new friend here!!).
Give them what they deserve and don't worry about retaliation feedback, it will make ebay a better place!!! Regards, Bill

Kim, I think letter is fine, and you should get price as stated, or back out of deal and give negative feedback. I agree with Bill on the feedback issue, I have a 100%, but I have never had a bad deal on e-bay, of course I have only bought 35-40 items, don't remember exactly been awhile since I bough on e-bay. I don't sell at all. In my opinion, a seller only has 2 reasons to post negative feedback, if they don't get paid, or paid in a timely fashion, or if a person posts untrue statements. But some post negative just because they got negative, even if it was true. I have seen several sellers state that they would not post feedback until buyer did because if you gave negative feedback, so would they. Too me negative feedback is a last resort, after you have tried e-mails and other means to rectify the problem. Terry

he did agree to keep the shipping at the price stated in the auctions. i still question what he is doing there exactly. the auctions are so clear that i cannot understand how he could be so confused??
dale the way i read it you can't charge extra on shipping, insurance, or cost of shipping materials but you can add a handling fee as long as it isn't excessive. i figured he was making about $14 on the shipping before he started adding things on. and yes he was planning on charging me insurance on all 3 items but stick them all in one package and only pay 1 insurance fee. i don't get where he's coming from with this but i'm glad he agreed to stand behind what it said in the auction. i think he's doomed to some bad feedback if he doesn't change this.

Here's the Ebay policy:
Excessive Shipping Charges Policy
Sellers may charge reasonable shipping and handling fees to cover the costs for mailing, packaging, and handling the items they are selling. While eBay will not prescribe exactly what a seller may or may not charge, eBay will rely on member reports and its own discretion to determine whether or not a seller’s shipping, handling, packaging, and/or insurance charges are excessive. Shipping and handling fees may not be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.
Sellers who want to be sure they are in compliance with this policy may charge actual shipping costs plus actual packaging materials cost (or less).
In addition to the final listing price, sellers are permitted to charge:
Actual Shipping cost: This is the actual cost (i.e. postage) for shipping the item.
Handling Fee: Actual packaging materials costs may be charged. A handling fee in addition to actual shipping cost may be charged if it is not excessive.
Insurance: Sellers offering insurance may only charge the actual fee for insurance. No additional amount may be added, such as “self-insurance”. Sellers who do not use a licensed 3rd party insurance company may not require buyers to purchase insurance. This is a violation of state law.
Tax: Only actual applicable federal, state, country, city, VAT, and equivalent taxes may be charged.
For cross border transactions, sellers may not collect tariffs and duties. However, buyers may be responsible for actual, applicable tariffs, and duties as requested by respective country laws.
Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:
Listing cancellation
Limits on account privileges
Account suspension
Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
Loss of PowerSeller status
