I have experimented with a small box lined with with white paper, an open front and white transparent top for a light above, but the results are not all that great. As good as cell phone cameras are these days, I use it instead of a camera , but need better lighting for my finished jewelry pics. Any ideas for one that won't break the bank and is suitable size for a single ring or pendant pic? I've looked at many light boxes on the internet, but nearly all are much larger than I want

I think her photos look great...she seems to think the shine on her finished stones is washed out a bit. What is "break the bank" for you budget-wise? Here are search results from Amazon for "light tent," and the prices on some don't seem that outlandish. Good luck. Dave

If you end up getting one, please do a report. I am still researching myself. Tela rockjunquie hit on color temp. The above two seem to have what you would be looking for. I seem to recall that 5500 k is considered a "daylight" bulb. I guess intensity would be the consideration after that. Good luck! Dave

Dave The only alterations I will do on my photos is a small tweak on brightness and sometimes contrast, so color temperature of the lighting is very important I refuse to alter or adjust colors in any manner. If they look that "off" I will re take them, or simply not post them anywhere.

Tommy's set up ONLY WORKS FOR HIS MAGICAL SELF!!!! Like everything else he does, he makes it look too easy! LOL! Us mere mortals should not attempt it.

The second one that you linked to will need to be used in a dark room. Well, any of them should be, but that one has a lot of open side. Plus, make sure you set the white balance. I'm a bit impressed by it. It's small enough for me to want to try it, too. But, I do use the full size of mine sometimes...

Yeah... I'm not sure if I can even explain (or defend) mine very well and it surely isn't something I can give any scientific details on. As Tela said it seems to work for me but it might just be a combination of direct light and residual light from the fluorescent lights in my garage and a big east facing window. I don't use any filters or any other doo-dads, just direct LED light and I'm on my third cell phone using it. I did a LOT of failing before I arrived at something adequate for taking my Etsy photos. It was born out of the remains of one of those light tent kits that I bought on Ebay. The only thing left is ONE of the lights which I cut off the base and hung from the top of my "box" if you can call it that. It's basically just one thin sheet of white plastic I brought home from work - similar material can be had from Tap Plastics in the bay area - I don't know if you all have a plastic shop like this. Maybe a craft store like Michaels etc. Something about the curvature of the plastic reflects the light just right - If I use two sheets at a 90 degree angle it gets very dark. One thing I've realized though is it has a very pin-pointed range - meaning even large cabochons push the limits and the outer perimeter of the photo gets very dark.

Hey Arlen I am sorta down n out right now. Had a infection in my back and they cut the fire out of me. Not allowed to go outside etc now. But I shall get going in the shop soon! Yes man I want to come to Branson and watch the master silver smith work for a couple of weeks!!! You better try a piece of that turquoise from Kingman!;;I threw a spall from our curb bashing into the Loto vibe. It didna grind up or even shape much! It didn't shine either. It came out and I was amazed because it's a very pretty light blue!!! I am going to Zam it to see if it shines. Have a good day my friend!!!

I hope you heal and recover quickly! January through March is the slow season in Branson, so that would be a good time to kill a couple of weeks. I have not cut a cab from it, but the big piece of resin that had a sliver of Turquoise on it that polished up quite nicely. I keep it in my display to help explain the stabilization process to folks and show them the resin.
