jamesp, wasn't sure of the term, so I had to look it up. Yes, it appears so. I knew "prickly pear" was used, and it appears they are one in the same. Not sure I'd be excited about trying the cactus party thing. Dave Yep, prickly pear. Does said salad use the purple fruit or the green leaves ? I wondered how inhabitants of Mexico made Tequila from cactus fruit. In terms of having enough fruit. A trip to S Texas changed that. Fields of massive prickly pear as far as the eye could see. And burdened with the fruits. And perhaps the most obnoxious human/mammal barrier known to man. |

Suggestion for the Zucchini, slice them longways into 1/4 inch strips, a bit of olive oil and seasoning, grill a couple minutes on each side. Make up enough strips to put a Lasagna together. Made it twice this summer, it was really good. Used a a sauce with 1lb of beef and home canned tomatoes that added to the flavor. The grilled Zucchini by itself is a good side dish especially the with smoked Salmon I made the other day. Use the skin off Salmon filet, season with the milder "Slap-Yo-Mama" seasoning, smoke over cherry or apple wood for maybe an hour or more depending the heat in the smoker until fish just starts to flake, double yum! Hey, I was going to talk rocks but someone started us down the veggie trail!! Just got 10 diamond blades I ordered to build the Super-Grinder, need to drill the CD spacers and then put it together. Also taking out one 3' X 10' raised Garden bed and changing it to Rock and Bucket storage. Hate to lose garden space but the bed was producing less and less with the increasing shade from the neighbors pine trees. Thanks for the recipe Henry. Looks like the rocks won the battle again. Squash not faring to well. "Slap yo Mama", a great name for a recipe book. A term commonly used by African American ladies in this area. Them ladies have attitude. We discovered we could make fine firm casseroles out of larger older squash. Like too firm to eat in a less cut up form. Remove seeds if starting to harden. Yellow or zucchini, even zucchini to 18 inches long. Lots of fruit in those big ones. Denise uses cheese and eggs in the casserole, not overdose of it. Healthy amounts. Then freeze. Your lasagna seems similar to egg plant parmesan, suppose a squash parmesan is just as doable. |

Hey nopalitos and carnitos ain't a bad combination. True, I am very big on Mexican food and I love anything Mexican with hot peppers, hatch chili peppers etc. Basically though, I'm a meat. potatoes, corn, rice and beans type guy *L*
And my momma dun whupped my ass all the time for not eating all my veggies. I can remember sitting at the table for hours with a plate of cold beets, broccoli, turnip green, sprouts etc etc in front of me. I was a very stubborn child and I'd go to bed with no dinner rather than eat that ugly crap veggie stuff. Dad used to say I made his arm tired whupping on me with a belt. In later years, I would voice my dislike for veggies with unwanted profanity at the table ( bad neighborhood growing up) and wind up rolling on the floor fighting with my pop. My moms favorite story was how she discovered the technique of throwing a bucket of cold water on us fighting in the yard worked on us just as well as if the dogs got in a fight. The gang  Squash standing around looking at the Rock pile  The Rocks did not appreciate the squash starring at them so they cut the squash in half and connected their halves to different squashes.   The Rocks were so angry they made squash boats out of the squash   Texas Two ended squash and schizophrenia squash, the Rocks did this to them too by distorting their genes with poisonous rock dust. Maybe snuffy can't even do this.     Triple personality squash  The poor squash before the party  So I punished 2 of the rocks by grinding them into a sphere and a discoidal and chunking them in a tumbler. A trip to S Texas changed that. Fields of massive prickly pear as far as the eye could see. And burdened with the fruits. And perhaps the most obnoxious human/mammal barrier known to man. Not sure if the fruit is used at all...any salad I've seen is predominantly the leaves (paddles). We've got some areas around our house with a prickly pear variety, and I wouldn't want to pass through it. However, I think the most obnoxious cactus is cholla. My folks warned me about it when I first visited them in AZ. Go onto YouTube and look for cholla vids. They are particularly nasty. Dave |

I give you credit for thinking outside the box. Well done. I love fresh veggies. Yum. Yes everyone needs a day out every once in a while. I bet you could find a side job in one of those fancy restaurants to do their food presentations. Well maybe not. Food fights with the rocks lol It's OK to get out of the box once in a while BeLinda. But it might be a problem if you can't get back in the box. Somewhere in a past life I have seen a fruit bowl with fruits made of what looked to be onyx. I guess this thread attracted like minded folks. Something to think about. The skit was created in a 10' long 30" deep stainless steel sink. It has multiple water taps and a high pressure pump feeding them. Has a slant away from operator and drains into a big gutter to keep splash off you. It was used to(#1) wash clay off of aquatic plants for divisions to repot on a massive scale. Butcher deer. Wash tumblers out. Serial killer activities(not really) Called the wash station. Guess I miss working the plants so the poor squash got slaughtered instead lol. wash station:  |

Got tired of rats getting into the tomatoes. Last year, killed 15 with snap traps until I gave up. Rats have stayed out of the jalapenos though. I love jalapeno jelly. (newer , more tender leaves are considered the fruit)They are peeled like a potato and are very popular. At times canned and in almost stores in the US. Cactus don't generate much starch to convert to alcohols with enzymes. Tequila is made from the hearts of giant Blue Agave which grow for years in a field. Then the large leaves are cut off with large knives by "Jimadores? the hearts are quartered and roasted in ovens to break down the fibers. Then crushed and fermented to make a "mash" which after complete fermentation is distilled into the tequila product. Better grades are made form the "Heart " of the distil run and the heads and tail fractions of the distillate are blended and sold as the cheaper grades with more bite. The "foreshots" are thrown away as in distilling all drinking ethanol's. Heck of a barrier to many animals but rarely slows down a thief.

Especially the ones with those little no-see-em spikes. Hard to believe anything can be as sharp as a cactus spine, especially a plant. It is the paddles they use on that dish. I must try it someday. Some of the better stocked grocery stores sell them here in Atlanta. OMG cholla cactus. All spines and more  |
