It's crooked, it's ugly, it's cheap and dirty, it's an insult to engineering and craftsmanship but it's working (so far). Lately I've been going through motors like crazy. They all broke down within weeks. I got hold of a 0.5bhp three phase motor which should be more than enough to run a barrel that's smaller than the motor itself. The motor runs on one phase power with a capacitor. Even though one phase drive reduces the power of the motor I'll be damned if the motor is going to break down this time. I made a terrible gearbox out of MDF and fan belts to reduce the rpm from 1375 on the motor to 60-ish on the gearbox crank.
Anyway, considering how poorly it's put together it is kind of a miracle that it works at all so I thought I'd share.

That is really chilly!
The name is fantastic too. All homemade tumblers simply must have a cool name.

Lego! I see Lego in your contraption! That's awesome! I can't stop using exclamation points!

I love it! I wasn't brave enough to try homemade pulleys when I did my tumbler, and I swear the pulleys were the most expensive pieces. I love the ingenuity that went into your tumbler. Great job on the Ghett-O 3.0

It's fantastic Garberg thank you for showing us. I have a request for you - we have a separate page where we feature homemade machines and such. I would like to eventually display your machine on that page but only having a video worries me. Videos on the web can die and go away after a few years so I would want a few photos to go along with it to preserve it. If you were able to take a handful of pictures of your contraption showing the vital parts - and add them into this thread that would be great - or you could email them to me if you want.

How did you get a 3 phase motor to run? The guy that trained me on HVAC tried to run a 3 phase on 230 single phase but couldn't get enough capacitors to throw it out of phase enough. In the Refrigeration trade the electronic marvels we didn't understand were grouped under the category "FM", M stood for magic.

johnjsgems: There are three things you have to think about when running a three phase motor on one phase power:
1. It only works if the motor's nominal power is less than 0,75kW 2. The motor has to be connected in D-configuration. 3. The capacitor should be dimensioned to 80mF/kW
Did your setup fulfill all three requirements?

It was a long time ago and a much larger motor. Don't remember which 3 phase as the city had both.
