I have extremely limited experience cutting pet wood, but the cellular pattern is stunning, but is the center pithy?

yes the center is pithy but its getting better as I grind down. I was hoping to cut slices off of it but it's not stable enough so I just started rounding the end over and I'll polish it

Looking at the outside only, I was tempted to say opalized wood (based on chalky exterior and underlying black), but I'm tempted to go with bone looking at the internal structure. Reptiles more than mammals, tend to have pithy long bones that form smaller vacuoles as they grow outward, and stay very porous near the central core (where the bone actually erodes and forms larger spaces as the growth moves to a larger diameter bone). All of this fits with what is shown in your photos. I remind us all that nothing is certain based on a few photos so I could be dead wrong, but I'm willing to lean toward bone.

Bone due to the cells on the ends. At first I thought wood as well.

Will adopt that great little penny from heavan surprise in a second. Good score!!! Sorry about the going back to work..and the cancelled broke back camel hunt.... Bone and a nice color to it. Sure can see why the people thought wood from the outside. Exposing the end like that really told you the truth. Looked at 300 or so pieces of bone over last 2 weeks so am pretty fresh on it.

fossilman .. Mike come over and look at Tommy's bone. He thought he was getting wood. You would be just one more smart guy to chime for the boss man.

He thought he was getting wood. Actually I was casually looking at a box of wood pieces and spotted that one was different from all the rest. I showed it to the vendor and told him it looked like bone but he was dismissive of the notion so I bought it just to prove a point LOL.
