Hi all - up till now I've focused my image fixing on prominent threads such as stickies and articles/tutorials. I've also gone through and helped a couple of members fix ALL of their broken images. That has worked OK as time has allowed but I'd like to shift gears a little bit.
If (when) you encounter an important thread that needs the photos fixed please feel free to respond in the thread and tag me. It doesn't take very long for me to come in and fix a couple of images as long as they still exist on PhotoBucket.
In case you don't know how to tag a person all you have to do is just type the @ symbol and their username.
@Tommy
If the broken image has the cat picture that says "click here" don't bother tagging me - those are permanently broken because the photo was deleted at the host.

I noticed the other day that google's cached versions and the image search still show the photobucket images... I imagine one could write a clever script to go collect 'lost' images that way. (I don't think the internet archive actually saves images) Maybe some other board has already solved this problem?

(I don't think the internet archive actually saves images) Maybe some other board has already solved this problem? Part of the problem is we are dealing with Proboards software on Proboards website with Proboards database. There are things we can alter in the template codes but they tightly control what goes where - meaning they forbid people from embedding scripts that set up off-site hosting. In the idea you're describing above, if we could install a script that went to Google/cache or even PhotoBucket and grabbed the photo where would it get hosted? They won't allow code that would then place the image on MY server. They strictly protect against file storage on their server or database unless you're paying through the nose for it with their file attachments storage mod. I could be wrong about parts of this - if anyone is knowledgeable about allowed methods of file storage in the framework of Proboards I'm all ears.

I was guessing that your current fix is to pull down the image for the broken links, host them on your server, and edit the link in the original post on proboards? Guess I was envisioning a script to automate that process. (been a few lot of years.) I can see that running something on the proboards end would be problematic. Is Proboards is interested in providing a solution? Certainly this debacle has weakened their product considerably, maybe they just want to sell server hosting, but It still seems like they'd have an interest in fixing old broken content. Must be others out there struggling with the same problem.
(2c, you've done quite an effort, nothing negative intended in the least.)

I often do Google image searches and see the Photobucket "pay up" image even there.

(2c, you've done quite an effort, nothing negative intended in the least.) Nothing negative taken! I see folks talk about automated solutions to solve the problem and I just shake my head because 1. we're dealing with Proboards, the least script friendly forum software on the market, and 2. I'm a hack at best. I'm fairly good at CSS but the closest thing I can do to actual programming like PHP or javascript is to take pre-written code and modify parts of it to fit certain needs.

FWIW - There are extensions for both firefox & chrome that will fix the problem for end users right now.

With that extension running I went to the cabbing section and went to page 50 to make sure a bunch of the posts would have been using pbucket. Clicked on all the old posts and all worked like nothing ever happened. I checked to make sure some were photobucket too. Not just my post but everyone's posts. I wonder if pbucket could put a stop to this too though?

How so? Please explain thanks. Chuck posted a Chrome link, basically a little piece of software (extension) listens for urls to photobucket images, when it sees one, it modifies it with one that works... and yes, it is possible that photobucket may break things down the road. Free has it's price. here's one firefox extension (there are a couple) addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-embedded-fix/?src=api here's a screen shot firefox left wo extension, Right, same page chrome w extension...

It's not working for me in Chrome... I've tried clearing out my browser cache but no luck. I wonder if one of my ad/tracking blockers is objecting to the activity of changing the URL. I will test further when I have time.

Try the another extension, in Firefox, I had one work and one not on one machine, not others?!. Haven't looked at the code etc, but there might be some settings etc... just search for chrome photobucket extension, here's a couple others... OK this is brilliant! in Chrome, this extension works for me. This one did not. I will test Firefox next.
