First a big Thank You [glow=red,2,300][/glow] to all of you nice folks here at RTH. I read lots of posts and found such great information. I followed recommendations and ordered plenty of crushed rock and grit and the Lortone 33B plus two extra barrels from the Rock Shed. Everything arrived today in great shape (okay, Fed Ex did knock the carton around a bit but the innards survived just fine). I am SO excited; can't wait to get started now that we have choices. Think we'll start with the mixed bag of stones Shawn sent with the tumbler--that way we can get used to the whole process and also get to see what various stones look like from start to finish. Shawn was so helpful. And yes, he included a bag of candy with my order. Gotta go. There are stones just waiting to be tumbled! (I want to have everything ready for when my hubby gets home and then the fun can begin!!!!) Lady B

This is how the obsession starts.........
Be prepared for lots more excitement and enjoyment along the way - and also the quite worrying urge to spend tons of money on more equipment and more rocks.......and then some more rocks.
Can't wait to see your first results - pics please when the time has come!!
Remember - any problems or queries just ask - there's bound to be someone somewhere that has the answer for you.
Good luck!!

I think I could cure anyone wanting to take on that challenge Nancy, all they would have to do is look at my two trial runs.... I named them both, one was "cousin it" and the other I like to call "The boat anchor", real beauties..Let me tell ya! Lady B, If and when you start to tumble that chrysocolla, look to Rockyone for some help, he has had some excellent results. It is a little different than tumbling anything else, disappears real quick if your not careful. Congrats on your new equipment, fun, fun, fun!!!!

So far we have not attempted to tumble any of our "very special" rocks and minerals, except for one experiment using our vibe tumbler which we hurriedly ended after about 12 hours. We (my hubby and I) managed to tear up the bottom of the vibe barrel and we really don't know why that happened because we thought we had followed all the directions and tips we could find here at RTH. Was it because we had put in rough garnets? We used 120-220 grit and followed the water guidelines. Now the vibe sits quietly, waiting to be fed when we get braver. We have also expanded the equipment line. We now have a Work Force saw but we have only used it a few times due to where we have to set it up and the vivid weather we have been having over the past month. We also bought a CE tumbler AND extra belts (from a sewing machine repair shop). Hubby adjusted the pulley tightness as was suggested by a fellow RTHer and the first CE belt lasted 36 hours. ;D The replacement belt is still going. We now have four barrels tumbling. Three are at the 60-90 stage and one (selected stones from our first two 60-90 tumbles) have progressed to the 120-220 stage. All the stones that are tumbling are Mohs Scale 7. We hope soon to have our own little cabbing machine which will be a wonderful addition to the family. But so far all of our "very special" rocks and minerals are still intact waiting patiently for me or my hubby to make the first cut or decide on the first tumble. I sometimes feel like this process is as tension-filled as finding just the right name for our children (Brunhilda and Horton, BTW). I will definitely look to Rockyone before attempting to do anything to the chrysocolla other than sitting and admiring it. Lady B

The garnet could have been hard on the barrel. Some abrasion is to be expected. Was it wearing a thin spot?
Vibes are so much fun. I urge you to try again.
