I am simply emphasizing the fact because I hear people calling Tiffany stone bertrandite all the time. In fact, the quote I responded to included the original poster who made referred to this as bertrandite. So don't take my comment personally. Thanks for the education James. Yeah, right or wrong, literally everyone calls it that. Your fight is more than it just being a wrong name though, it's a deep seated belief that Tiffany stone contains beryllium - I even got lectured by the well-meaning store owner yesterday about wearing mask/protection etc.

And again it very trace amounts when present.

I wonder what the beryllium would look like? I cut this cab today out of the rock in the original post and the "fibers" popped out like crazy under the magnification of the camera. Again, this rock keeps surprising.

That cab is Stunning!! I haven’t ever cared for purple until I started cabbing. Thank you both - sadly it's not very attractive in hand. The lighter colored area with the texture lines is very soft and barely took any kind of shine at all. I've worked with variable hardness Tiffany stone before but this was completely different - can't really call it undercutting since the soft material is 3/4 of the material. The end result is an oddly bumpy surface and shape with the dark colored polished agate sticking out higher than the rest of the cab. vegasjames - the reason I posted the cab is I've never seen anything like those 'fiber' patterns in tiffany stone and I wonder what they are. Regarding bertrandite not always being present - maybe the pop culture could change if we knew what to look for. If beryllium is not always present BUT we don't know what to look for then every piece I pick up is going to be assumed to have it. It's too nasty of stuff to handle it any other way.

In general it would be hard to look for since it is so uncommon in Tiffany stone that it normally would be hard to see. But if you look at the pics I posted links to bertrandite can form rectangular crystals. Maybe what you are seeing are not really fibers but rather bertrandite crystals that happen to be concentrated in that piece.

Here are some Mindat images of bertrandite crystals, which closely resemble (to my eye) what Tommy is seeing in his cab. www.mindat.org/min-642.html

Wow Tommy, that cab is killer-diller! It's not only great material but the capture has us swirling off into the Cosmos. Very well done!

Beautiful cab! Reminds me of: I posted a while back if anyone new why Van Gogh painted the circles around the lights and nobody answered. Anyone know why?

I posted a while back if anyone new why Van Gogh painted the circles around the lights and nobody answered. Anyone know why? Dilaudid? Close, it was a pharmaceutical drug. He was on digitalis and had digitalis toxicity. One of the side effects is seeing halos around lights.
