Hi all, I'm fairly new, here, great forum! First a few Kentucky agates: This next one isn't the most 'conventionally beautiful', but just so amazing & one of my favorite types (crushed/shattered then healed ; ), what a fascinating story it could tell! Some interesting KY moss agate: A KY iron ore/magnetite piece with fossils (ID anyone? Algae?) Some secret location Oregon desert moss agate (the pic doesn't come close to true orange & pink colors!) A Scottish agate from my collecting trips: & finally, from one of my favorite bear canyon finds, an end cut.. Sorry for the variable photo quality π

Thanks for the welcome y'all!! I've enjoyed checking out the pictures of everyone's great rocks on here, & figured it was only fair to share.
Yes, 99% of my rocks are self collected, after logging in at least a million miles driving all over the creation rockhounding, haha.
I've probably spent over 9,000 hours hunting KY agate alone since moving back to KY 9 years ago. Have made friends out all over agate country & also just went in on some prime KY agate land with a few friends, so we can actually dig for rocks now! Should be interesting.
Captbob, preciate it, about the hard earned KY agate intel, think I feel about it roughly how S.W. turquoise experts feel about their locations/mines, lol (obvious large $ discrepancy, but just love the ky material). I'm always up to trade location hosting though, trade one hunting trip in a rare location for another ;-).
Only piece I didn't find myself here is the yellow & pink KY agate slab, got that one from Roland McIntosh. A friend named that the 'unicorn galaxy' π¦π.
Fossilman, I mostly collect them, cut slabs, & hack out the occasional rough jewelry or carving, but mostly love the hunt, & see the piles of rough as a retirement investment... I would really like to learn some real jewelers skills though! Guess I figure to pile up the rocks while able & then I'll have plenty of material to process as I get less mobile π€ . Based on the name, have you ever fossil hunted in KY? There's a ton of non-agate fossils here & most collectors are totally uninterested...

Your Kentucky brethren might just figure out your spot. I'm about in the mood to do some Kentucky agate hunting myself. Will have to venture deep in the mountains for the prime agate. But getting there is the hard part. I'm limited to the local variety, the stuff is not as spectacular as the stuff coming out of Estill and Powell county. grrrrrrr. Keep yer filthy location to yerself. Or I will have my buddies and I drive to yer spot and pilfer every last KY agate. If only. NNNggggggggggggghhhhhh, those agates look splendid. I wonder if anyone of them is from Estill.... haha, don't mind me.... I need some motivation to visit the local creek. Tomorrow ought to be a darn good day to get to work. These pictures might just be enough for me to get up and around.

Haha, Adam, well no worries, if you stumble upon our agate land we'll treat ya well...
... as in we'll make it reeeeal quick πββοΈπ»πΊπͺπ½ππ₯ (lol, j/k man obviously, as you & I both know, KY folks are amongst the most reasonable people out there & the rumors are mostly silly, notice the 'mostly' though, ha). Anyways, just checked out yr KY agate threads & that sagenitic one is a beauty! Also, rockcastle/madison have some great stuff when you can find a good spot, only place I've seen 12"+ agate geodes, usually just find a broken half though & wonder if some old timer rejected it 50 years ago, seems to often be the case throughout the state... Good to hear there's more KY people on this board : ).
Fossilman, it's mostly corals of course, but there are a lot of interesting fossils in the chert too, often scenic, & I hope to get around to posting some of those. Hope the eggs were good ; ).

Thanks pat, hope you're stayin outta the smoke in CA! Both my sisters live out there & I love hunting for nephrite up around the Eel river drainage.
Accidentalrockhound, yeah, the fosssils/orbs are really interesting & may as well be π½ to me, no idea what it really is... Up close, the orbs almost look to have DNA type patterns inside!
Sabre52, that bear canyon agate is one of my favorites. It was a broken outer chunk & it actually opens up into fortifications on the more inner side. had one more slice from that pieve but gifted it years ago, heh...

I didn't know if all the opened geodes were caused by humans or just naturally over millions of years of tumbling in the creeks/rivers. I still have not went on that agate geode hunt. Assessing the best creeks nearby to pilfer. The last time I went rock hunting was about a month ago. I heard shots fired and I got the hell out of the creek and had my crew drive off, pronto. Man, people can be assholes with their guns. I've pretty darn sure no one owns the creeks, just the land around the creeks. Oh well, if anyone hears of me shot dead in a creek, then you know the story. Some radical redneck must've got trigger happy. Who knows what kind of illegal operations are underway in these hills, hidden in the dense underbrush... I seriously need to get out today.

I believe you need to be careful with your assumptions that no one owns the creeks. In Texas that's definitely an incorrect assumption and will get you in trouble. It would be better to get permission before accessing an area.

in ny if someone owns the property on both sides of the creek then they own the creek or riverbed as well. you can boat through but of you drop anchor or get out (if its shallow) and touch bottom you can be ticketed. thanks to a local senator who owns a large amount of land on the popular salmon river. since they passed the law the dec cops patrol that stretch of river heavily every year during the salmon run.
