I have a chunk of IPS that I want to cut up but it's way too big for my 10" push-thru saw using water.
I can cut it on the 18" saw but I'm worried about using oil with the porosity of the material being what it is. Will it change the color? Would I ever be able to get the oil out of the material?
Has anyone cut IPS using mineral oil?

I've slabbed it with Covington Rocksaw oil, no problem except the blade tends to run drier and maybe bind in the cut more often. Rock was not stained at all after the kitty litter and dish soap wash....Mel

Nope,I just drop it in the litter until the excess oil is off it, then I put in in my tub with dawn dishwasher soap for an hour or so. After that I just set the slabs in the sun to dry a day or so. No staining at all. Used to be a booger to cut on my 20 inch saw though. If the workpiece had the blade running through a long cut with a lot of blade edge contact, the paint rock seemed too draw the oil away from the blade a bit making it bog down. I've noticed some wonderstone does this too....Mel

Thanks for your help Mel - so far so good. I added some extra oil to the saw before starting and haven't experienced dry blade yet but I know what you mean. I've been washing new slabs in a bucket of dawn soap and water, into the kitty litter for two days, then a final dawn soap wash. Good looking stuff and maybe less porous than other pieces I've had in the past.

Tommy - That's a very colorful slice of Indian Paint Stone. You could also soak it in oil before cutting so it can't absorb any more during the cut. Lynn

Nice cut with great color and pattern. I did notice a multi hardness thing in all the slabs I cut. Some light sections seemed to be much softer than other darker sections. Have not cut a lot so because I had such a hard time getting a decent polish, so I don't now if that is typical or not...Mel
