Received Thumler 12 from Cabelas as a BDay present. It arrived with partial open box, didn't think anything of it since I didn't know what was supposed to be in it anyway.
Started first batch of Sierra Foothills river rock a couple days ago. Noticed base bent. Barrel rides against white bushing constantly.
I've got a creek and do some panning, picking out "the pretty ones" when I come across em. Don't have to lick em to see cuz they're already wet.
As for grit: put tailing grit (sand size to 1/16-1/8") is that OK?

You can probably straighten the base. If the tailing grit is a lot harder than the rocks it would work. If it is just sand you'll be doing what the rivers do to tumble rocks. If you are tumbling agates with sand I'm not waiting for pictures. Silicon carbide is what you need.

Can I do anything with "black sand"? Can I use walnut shells for the finish process? Can I use something other than having to spend $$$ to send away for different grits?

Now that I've been running the tumbler a few days I'm finding that the barrel is rubbing against the white nylon keeper. It's wearing away at the lip of the barrel and even when I tilted the whole thing thinking it would slide the opposite direction the darn thing creeps back up hill to continue to rub.
