Ok, I love lurking and scrolling through perfectly tumbled and photographed rock pictures just as much as the next rockhound. But I'd LOVE to see some clean-out shots. You know, right after you've washed all the polish off and let them dry, but haven't removed the media you used? I'm one of those "learn by seeing" kinda weirdos. Or is this like requesting to dig through a strangers underwear drawers??

Well, I would never let them dry with the plastic beads in there, In fact my colander has holes big enough to let the beads through before the burnishing and drying stage.

GA clay (red mud???) from jamesp .
Still got some grit hanging on here.
Rock soup
Cleaned off
No media, other than jamesp 's GA clay and the 30 grit from Kingsley North. Probably have some finished photos of these, have to take a look.... I think this was the batch before last.
Wooferhound - WTG! Lortone 12 lb-er! I love the Lortone, thank you James for sending the barrel to me!!
ETA - photos actually from rocks tumbled in my Scott-Murray 15 lber from mohs (thanks again, Ed!), but I also have a Lortone 12 lber. They both feed my GyRoc A.

Sounds like you are looking for size and quantity of smalls per load? I would not have pictures of that because I separate my finished rocks from my ceramics before I dry them. The ceramics stay in the strainer to dry out. On mixed rocks batches 30% of my volume will be a mix of small and large ceramics (from the rockshed). On obsidian or batches that contain rocks with a lot of flats like cabochons I will use 50%-75% ceramics. I should note that I finish my batches in a loto vibrating tumbler.

This is my normal clean out method Aimee. However this clean out was done prematurely at 12 hours to inspect SiC 30 after 12 hours of rolling. Clay slurry thickener mine Receiving tray Screen with 1/4" holes Barrel ready to open The dump Close visual inspection of 12 hour old SiC 30(bad photo, but particles seem equally distributed) Wash down. The orange black and white slab at top center is thin as a guitar pic. It is unbroken, telling that the rocks are running gentle. Water poured off to expose heavy SiC 30 for inspection Used SiC 30 washed down to corner and ready to pour into glass jar SiC 30 spread out on dinner plate. left is 12 hour old SiC 30, right is virgin SiC 30 If doing a normal clean out I always pour off the water and inspect the bottom of the tray to be sure there is no left over SiC 30.

jamesp, I did not tumble the spoon, I only used it for lifting the rocks out, doing a little sampling. Did not want to dump the entire barrel out.

Because it wasn't a full blown cleanout, only a check and add. Just seeing if the rocks had rounded enough. Add more grit and give them more time, or let the grit break down fully, do a full clean out and move them on.

You don't want to know the things tumbled here on the back 40. What puzzled me about the spoon was that it is covered in slurry; why didn't rockpickerforever just use her hands to pull samples ? Jean

Don't know why I used a spoon, didn't want to get my hands dirty? Didn't work too well, as I remember, they still got covered in gray slime!
ETA - What happens on the back 40 in GA, stays in GA??

Lol, oldy moldy. That was 1969 in the midst of the 'Peace' era. Well, this is an ATV household. All movement is on ATV's. Parked next to front door. There is a network of trails on the unoccupied 4000 acres on 2 sides of the farm. In days gone by there was illicit activities on the 4000 acres. Been some excitement back on those trails. Most recently was a sting operation by the GBI on trail bikes and ATV's to capture the meth heads way back on the other side that were stealing our phone cables. Good riddance, they corralled 8 of them and set them off at the Federal penitentiary. One of them already served for murder, bad bunch. Used to be Alice's Restaurant on those 4000 acres, "you can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant". No more, everyone grew up and no one hardly goes back there anymore.
