I've noticed alot of New Mexicans and Arizonians on the board... and even though I grew up in NM, the "local" rock shop in my home town seemed to pass away with the owners. And I've been living in Las Vegas NV....but am back in NM for the holidays. Anyway... I'm driving back from Las Cruces... to Tuscon... Pheonix via I-10 .... then taking AZ 60/93 up to Vegas.... And I want to break up the drive and stop at some rock shops along the way. I'm hoping not to leave the interstate or other roads too far. Are there any good rock shops along this route?? The local one in Vegas is so.... bland.... I want something different... thanks for the help! Geo

Discount Agate House is one of the best, if not the best rock shops in Tucson. I go out there all the time. Going west from the City of the Crosses, (Las Cruces) get off on the Grant Street exit when you get to Tucson. Go right on Grant Street for about five or six miles, then make a left on Dodge Blvd. Go down about a mile or so and the rock shop will be on your left. You said you want to stay close to the interstate, and this might be a ways, but it will be well worth it. Their prices are reasonable, the stuff they have there is great, and the people there are very friendly.

I might be ready for a decent stop by then. I just know how some of my rock collecting friends get... "oh its just off the interstate" and next thing you know you're driving onto dirt roads 30 miles from where you started.
BTW.... can you exit on Grant??? with the construction. When I came through last weekend, they had a bunch of exits closed off.. and I have no idea where Grant is.

Hiya Geo, There is a couple that I know of.. One is that RockArizona On Grand Ave.. in PHX.. can't remember the exact address but I can get it for sure if you really want it.. and then there is a really cool shop..a small one but a really nice guy runs it.. on the way going back to vegas.. I think you go towards Kingman correct? if so on your way you will be going through Wickenburg.. sound familar yet? well just before you get into wickenburg there is a small rock shop off on the right hand side of the road as you come out of PHX and Into Wickenburg I think that's where you turn to get back onto the interstate.. I can't recall but I'm almost positive.. I'll try to find out tonight and get back to ya for sure.. But that guy is one of the sweetest old guys around.. and his dad was well known.. even in some book I believe..but anyways.. I'll find out for ya.. just tell em where ya heard of his shop from and I'm sure you'll get a GREAT discount!

Thanks, Roxy.... I forgot to check the board last night, to see this msg before I left. I know which shop you're talking about, I believe... says "Gems" on the front? on the south side of Wickenburg. Unfortunately it was closed when I drove by going both directions.
I saw another one outside of Wickiup with "Nothing Rock Shop" sign, not sure if it was the same one I saw when I headed south, but since I went by after 5... it looked closed too.

You know..I used to own a piece of land in Congress AZ..I used to pass that little shop all the time..but never stopped in....I regret that now....as I have not been to AZ for about 4yrs now...once I moved out here to Northern Cali....my other hobby is feeding all the wild animals near me..and I hate to leave them alone for too long..anyway that is another story..is it a little light green building....ofcourse I was more into prospecting for gold back then...before the rock bug bite me..oh..and he bit hard too...lol..

Could be. I was cruising at a pretty good speed. It was somewhere between the turn off to Bagdad and before you get to Wikieup. Off the road a ways. Checked google maps... but all the "nowhwere az" are south or east of 93.

The Nothing shop is fenced off and closed down. I don't know if there's a rock shop in Nowhere. Burro Creek is between Nothing and Nowhere

I should mention, I did stop at DAH. And picked up about 10 lbs of quartz varieties for about $25. Ok, so just calling it quartz is probably blasphemous, but coming from a geologists background thats what I learned them all to be. But I picked up carnelian, onyx, jasper, and a few varieties of agate.

So is Nowhere north or south of Nothing?
That section of road is manageable for a long day's drive.... that is... half a day down and half a day back. So I might get back to the rock shop south of Wickenburg sometime. Although with 20+ lbs of rock waiting for the tumbler (1.5 -3 lb capacity) I'm not in any dire need of more material.

LOL.. I don't know where nothing is except I've been nowhere and ended up someplace on the otherside of here.. and there.. lol.. I know I know bad joke.. but seriously.. all I know is you did pass that little rock shop going into wickenburg and he's got a reasonable price... and even passed by Date Creek.. where you could of dug for quartz crystals.. and of course burro creek has allll sorts of agates out that way.. but that's a whole day trip.. cant just pull over and pick one or two up.. well I couldn't anyway.. But it sounds like you made out like a bandit with a 10 lb supply.. and a cool assortment too.
