Hello all please bear with me.. I am wanting to drill anything from soft shale/mudstone to Mount Ida quartz. Is my best bet a “low cost” drill press from a place like Harbor Freight or just use my dremel tool? Not sure what speeds are best for this job. Thanks for looking.

I have been using a Dremel to drill Arkansas Quartz. No issues, the Quartz is actually easier to drill than most agates or Jaspers due to the alignment of the molecules in the crystal. My wife bought gave me the Drill Press for the Dremel for my birthday, it makes drilling a lot easier and more controlled. Good wife!!
Remember when drilling to either keep the rock submerged or to spray water on it. Without that the rocks or the bit can be damaged.

The drill press stand for the Dremel costs about as much as the whole miniature drill press from Kingsley North or other suppliers like Rio Grande. I and others have noticed the Dremel stand has a bit of sideways flex and will skate on the stone if not started real carefully. Me I have the Dremel setup and use it, but would go the other route in my next time around.
