I've bought a few cabs & matched-pair cabs from eBay sellers in India. Recently I had bad luck with over saturated photos that were nowhere near what the actual cabs looked like. Here's one from treasuregems14. My photo on the left. Theirs on the right. Stay away from this seller! Also dadugems, super-gems, ranigemstone, silverngems 15, baligems2016, & rubygems 16 use photo editing deception. On a positive note, I've had good experiences from gemstoneshouse, fiestagems, gems_stones_india, & skgemsandjewellery. Lynn

Yeah, I noticed they've upped their photoshop skillz lately. They used to just crank the saturation (etc) slider, and the effect would be applied to the whole picture. The pics with fingers in them are a dead giveaway of this because the part of the finger in shadow turns bright pink. However, as with this example, they seem to have learned to apply the enhancement only to the stone itself, so the fingers (and grass, etc in the background) still look normal.
Thanks for the heads' up.
I have also had problems with generally well known and well loved ebay sellers enhancing their pictures too much. There are two biggies that I now will not buy from because of that. Annoying. Even some of the really honest nice ones are doing it - probably accidentally or by their camera settings. Frustrating!

And they cancel the auctions if they are about to sell something for less than they want.

As a general rule, I won't buy from an Indian dealer. There may be some good ones, but I haven't run across one, yet.
The last time I took a chance on an Indian seller was on etsy. It was for labradorites. I'm pretty good about picking out the enhancements, but this guy fooled me. He then told me that if I wanted to do a return that his mail system was not safe and that he couldn't be responsible for anything lost or stolen in the mail. Now I'm stuck with them and they weren't even that cheap. One was a purple that looked really great in the picture. Not so much in person.

Yeah, you've got to count on no returns with the foreign sellers. Indian sellers are really the only place to get moonstone cabs though it seems like.
I recently got a nice slabette from a1gemshop, which arrived fast and is pretty much like the picture. I have a labradorite currently on its way from Kalagems - will see how it looks in person.

A lot of them from India and from China use photos they have taken from someone else. I always google the image (item) to see if it pops up in multiple places. My guess, just based off the hand, this is the case in the above photo.

Maybe not the case here...who knows, but they do use images that are nicer than the product they have. I've had pictures stolen on ebay until I started watermarking them. And I've gotten product that was no where close to the item. Started doing some research and found the same picture on the web from another site. Happened once on Etsy as well.

I know it happens a lot, esp with the Chinese. I always watermark my jewelry pics and tag my files, too. I use to have a FF plugin to google search similar images, but it became obsolete. I'm sure I could get another. I've heard a lot of it happening on etsy. I don't think it has happened to me, though.

The sellers on Alibaba are notorious for lifting photos from manufacturers' websites to sell poorly crafted knockoffs that don't even come close to looking like the real thing.

Lynn's stone matches the pattern in the image. Color is different.
The Indians come to Q, the cabs are cheap. If I was buying bulk I'd buy in hundred lots of various materials. Then repolish as needed. Buying singles overseas is a crapshoot. They don't sell like we do.

@shotgunner I've never seen Indian cab sellers at Quartzite. What venue do they sell at? Lynn They were at desert gardens last year. Had rough, cabs and finished silver pieces in qty. The Afghans also had cheap lapis cabs.

Huh, I'd be interested in finding the Indian cab sellers too. There's that one guy who always comes - is it Village Gems? or something - I know he imports his cabs, but he's from Boston or something.
