Nice set up Ron!
I have a drill press set up for my Dremel and got some diamond drill bits when I went to the rock show. I haven't set it up yet because I don't have anything ready to drill.
The drill press set up I understand, but I can't quite figure out the bottom part - 'splain, please! What kind of tray is that and what's all the white stuff around and in it? I assume the black square in the middle is the ceramic. That little tip will probably keep me from breaking lots of rocks! Do you change out the ceramic tile when it gets a bunch of holes in it? Is it glued or attached to the bottom of the tray some way?
I don't have any place to set mine up permanently, so I will be doing my drilling at the wood picnic table outside.

How do you attach the stones to the tile? Got the press and dremel, just don't want to snap any of those pricey bits. R.O. hubby

Thanks Ron for this excellent tutorial, with pictures, of rock drilling. I am sure it will help me avoid some pitfalls when I make my first attempt at drilling through a rock! I nominate you for our rock drilling instructor award! And the reward for this outstanding award - not a darn thing except a big thumbs up and a WTG, Ron!

I'm printing this thread out and saving it too, and I don't even have any plans to get such a set up. But if I ever do, this info looks great.

I also use a Dremel for drilling, and here is where I got my diamond burrs: cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=uscuttingtools&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50If anyone knows of a good website to find others that are longer and perhaps cheaper (?) I would be very happy. I use these for rocks and glass. If they are worked slow and in water they last awhile, but if you run them fast and dry, you would be lucky to get one hole drilled. My normal use I can get about 6 holes from one bit... depending on the hardness.

Very nice info & setup Ron! I have a dremel too. I'll probably buy a Dremel Drill Press stand as well after I go further into the hobby. It seems to be very useful.

What size bits do use use? Should say burrs, but I call them bits. How long are they?

BE, have you checked True Value? I went to the dremel site - www.dremel.com/html/home_fr.html - clicked on the Buy Now, which took me to a page that lists the places that sell them. True Value is listed. I bet if they don't have one in stock, they could order you one. lz
