This is a 6 inch diameter ball mill. Filled less than a rock tumbler but similar action. Filled with 3/8" balls for grinding glass. Lyrics by Steppenwolf JR lol. Good representation of the action of a rotary tumbler at higher speeds. See 85 RPM action at 55 seconds. - approaching maximum for rock tumbler See 113 RPM action at 138 seconds - too fast Good reason why not to run a rotary above 85 RPM. Unless you have a bit of a thick slurry; but if your slurry gets thin you may beat your rocks up. From 3:13 to 3:40 the barrel is turning at 85 RPM and it can be seen that the theory that hard barrels crushes grit faster is laughable. There is little movement or impact against the barrel wall. The abrasive gets crushed in the layer below the avalanche on top layer. Thats where the rock grinding takes place. Area 2 is where the most intense grinding happens, Area 1 (top) is next. The least grinding is the bottom area 3: If you want to grind rocks fast without damage the barrel should run about 75 RPM max. with a slurry for safe keeping. Then 25 to 30 RPM with say SiC 30 -80 for a week to 10 days. (all speeds for a 6 inch barrel) Cut speed by ratio of barrel diameter increase. To prep rocks for vibe or 220 step in rotary. I used this video a long time ago to get an idea of how my 6" PVC barrels function. I have run my 6 inch barrels at 70 RPM. Problem with that is you have to add coarse SiC every day. Too much work. Using bulk SiC I may go back to 65 to 70 RPM since it time releases basically. If in a hurry to coarse grind.

Well OK, you're the expert. A simple guy like me might ask, then why do your barrels wear so fast with super course grit? And why are you trying to build an indestructible barrel?

Sure there is some effect. Keep in mind the poor barrel is 24/7. Appears the grit is having it's way with the barrel more than the barrel having it's way with the grit. Do you have a Lortone or a Thumler ? Need to know on behalf of science. What would your Mom say about that music ? You were joking I presume ? My Mom was a sweet Christian lady but loved Lynyrd Skynrd lol.

Well, come to think of it, someone gave it to me and I handed it off.... Next science question, how many RPM is your Lortone ?

I have music on at work every day for 10 hours a day so I listen to any and all types of music. I think Jazz and classical are the only two that don't make the cut. Internet radio opens up a whole lot of radio station options. Chuck

Been awhile since I have timed my lortones but that is how I set up my homemade tumbler. I matched the lortone speed. Left all the technical stuff to the pros. Seems like the 3 pound barrels were about 42 rpm and the 6 and 12 pound barrels were around 30 rpm.

I got 2 of those barrels when I started tumbling. The photo below is it after 2 months running, those are hard SDR thin wall PVC. That guy is a crook and someone needs to choke his drawers full of schnit. Yep. I could build barrels for resale out of this heavy duty black plastic. Guess what, they would buy the $48 unit instead of a $100 black pipe unit that I made that lasts a lifetime. My interest is using cheap time release bulk grit and faster running barrels. I tumble 4 cheap. And fast. And hassle free. But I will need those heavy black barrels to stand up to the bulk grit. So today I went to the big industrial distributor. This one will be built in 20 minutes, 2 fittings requiring one weld and cut snout shorter. 8.5 inch pipe, 9/16" wall thickness. I have a couple of other alternate designs. They wouldn't be resold for $48. They will take care of jamesp's needs. $48 jamesp
