 These two photos are merely the same photo turned upside down, but the perspective changes the total effect for my eyes most of the time.  The original rock formation was a series of eroded holes in a vertical rock face in Baja California, Mexico. Do you see what I see? |

No, it was unnecessary to flip the negative. The original B&W print produced the flip when rotated 180 degrees. Its a matter of the shading and what side of the concavity its viewed from. Alas I don't recall what kind of rock it was.

That looks like tafoni, which is granular rock, eroded by the wind. It is often seen near the coast, and I've seen it most often in sandstone.

i have the same problem with images like this - McDowell and Barnes Buttes in Phoenix. Are the dark places high or low?  |

The dark areas are shadows cast by higher points of elevation blocking the sun.

Suppose I need to get Google Earth Pro. After every rock collecting trip I go to Google Maps - Satellite View and scope out the area I was in. Good to study the terrain where the rocks were and what I may have missed or interesting to-be-explored areas in the future. One can see changes in surface where agates occur from where they do not. It is somewhat of a challenge as I do not have a Smartphone so I do not have co-ordinates to find the area.
Studied the terrain on Singleton Ranch for quite a while and I have a good idea where I am headed once my feet hit the ground, unfortunately may never have a chance to test out my advanced scouting if the Ranch is shut down for collectors.
