I finally made it over to George West, to hunt the County Roads for Pet Wood. I've seen material from the area and heard others Sabre52 talk about hunting there, but haven't ever been able to make the trip. Wednesday, my luck changed and had a few hours to kill after a customer fishing trip, about 2 hours away. The strategy is to find County Roads in the George West / Three Rivers area, and hunt along the edge of the road. I was only able to hunt 2 roads, as my tire decided it was a great time to deflate! Even so, I was able to fill up a 5 gallon bucket in about 1.5 hours. Here is a small map of the area. I hunted 441 and half of 443 before I noticed the flat tire. There is some beautiful material out there! I picked up a bunch of tumble size pieces, but also found some really nice 2-3 pounders that will make some really nice small slabs. Here are a few of the finds (sorry for the cell phone pics).
1) 2) 3) 4) 2 ponder 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) 12) Limb cast?
13) Looks like there could be some moss inside.
14)
15) 3 ponder that Is one of the favorite finds. Hoping to get it cut soon! 16)
17)
18) Even found a little botryoidal.
19) Found this piece that looks like it's been worked, but it's hard to tell.
Thanks for Looking!

And the rich get richer. That's a good looking bucket full of material. I've enjoyed tumbling the George West stuff...that I had to buy. One day, Jeremy, one day. I'll need a guide, of course.

Thanks, Randy! Did you post any photos of your GW tumbles? Just curious how they came out..... Some of the really colorful wood looks like it could have some vugs. My guide services are cheap, fun, and always available . Get something on the calendar!

Nice haul Jeremy, #19 has definitely been worked as it shows a lot of flaking on the edges. I can be in that area in about 3 and half hours, let me know next time.

This was a spur of the moment road trip. The fish were biting and we limited out by 8:15, giving me a small window to get over there. Next time I'll plan it out better and get you down there. It's better than I thought it would be!

So many County Roads to hunt and so easy to pick up some great material, quickly! The hardest part was trying to identify the chert, that was disguised as petrified wood. Thanks for posting information on the area!

Great finds. If I ever escape Oregon, I'm going to go raid Texas. Not that Oregon is lacking in good material, but if you can get away, bring a big truck!

Wow, that shrink wood is way cool. I am leaving in the morning but will get some pictures when I start cutting. Might be too cold to start the saw up but will try and post some pics if my buddy has time to cut some for me. The one ton I was driving held 30 some 5 gal pails full of rock earlier this summer.....looking forward to spending some more time. My friends wife has some land near Indianola that suppose ot have some civil war trenches, bringing my metal detector with when I come back. I didn't even know there was battles there.

That wood has a lot going on! Some pieces appear to have had different phases of mineralization, with different replacement mixtures being available. The first couple of pieces are similar to pieces I collected just north of Lajitas in the Big Bend area, the agate veins running through mostly black wood. Dang! another place to collect added to my growing list. Should have been retired 5 years earlier!
